Donnie Darko for grownups... A glorious rebuke to a dumbed down movie world
Firstly... Watch this film before you read anything about it to take in the full effect.
From start till finish this $7000 film is exquisitely and painstakingly put together by only a few people. Every shot is well thought of and the plot is one that will challenge you and keep you guessing until the end.
Don't be put off by bad reviews as those people do not have the mental capacity to take in the complex plots of Primer and assume that it isn't the masterpiece that it is.
This is one of those films that will be remembered as one of the cult greats.
Enjoy!
I knew this had mixed reviews when I watched it. I hoped despite others being a little confused by it, I would be intelligent enough to fathom what was going on. Disappointingly most of this film was spent looking at my guests every so often to check whether they were getting the plot. None of us were, and this is why: all of the actors in this film seem to have the exact same voice! who knows who's talking at any one time. Secondly, who knows what they're talking about?! not me! they speak in half sentences and appear to be telling each other things but sentences aren't finished. They're definitely into inventing something but I don't know what. We got the jist by the end but the charactors weren't very complex. It was very realistic for a fly on the wall documentary, just not that interesting.
I am sure with the right time and dedication, you could try to understand the film - but when it's a Friday night, who wants to have to try to enjoy a film?! 2 Stars is generous.
