Most helpful review Private Practice - Season 1

    [Highly rated reviewer]

Private Practice revolves around the fabulous Addison Forbes Montgomery (played by the gorgeous Catherine Deneuve lookalike, Kate Walsh), who quickly rose from a guest-star on Greys to a regular & much-loved character on that show. So it was inevitable that her character would be the one picked to spin off to capitalise on her popularity.

Addison is a world-renowned double-board certified OB-GYN, who leaves Seattle Grace at the end of Greys Season 3 to start a new life in Santa Monica at a medical practice owned by her two old college friends - Naomi & Sam.

There is a small core cast of characters - Naomi & Sam (Audra McDonald - 4 time Tony winner & Taye Diggs - Kevin Hill), ex-husband & wife with a child, who run the practice together. Cooper, a paediatrician (Paul Adelstein - Prison Break), Violet a psychiatrist (Amy Brenneman - Judging Amy), Pete, a holistic medicine practitioner (Tim Daly - The Nine), Charlotte, the Chief of Staff at the nearby hospital (KaDee Strickland) & Dell, trainee midwife/receptionist (Chris Lowell - Veronica Mars).

The show is more grown-up than Greys - the main characters are in their late 30s/40s - & the tone is generally lighter & less angsty. The drama isn't as OTT or heightened. The medical cases are drawn from a wider background & touch on more ethical/moral issues than Greys which focused mainly on surgical cases. I prefer it to Greys for these reasons.

The Santa Monica setting means the show is brightly-lit & well photographed. No grey skylines or boring hospitals here. Lots of blue skies, beaches & bright colours.

The cast are all established stars in the US & seasoned actors. Kate Walsh is fantastic in the lead, & although it is an ensemble show like Greys, the focus is very much on Addison as the lynchpin.

There are the usual guest-stars that you will recognise if you follow other US shows, including David Sutcliffe (Gilmore Girls) who guests as Addison's love interest near the end of the 1st season & into the 2nd.

The 1st season was the highest-rated drama of the 07/08 TV season, but it was hit by the US writer's strike & only completed 9 of the 22 episodes ordered. Therefore this season is brief & rather uneven, but it does provide a good introduction to the main characters.

During the hiatus they tightened up on the writing which was the weakest link in the 1st season, & the 2nd season returned strong.

Not sure where the other reviewer got their info, as there were no cast changes between seasons LOL. The only cast change occured between the pilot (which aired as part of a Greys episode) & the 1st season when Audra McDonald replaced Merrin Dungey as Naomi, which was a good move.

Season 2 is due to be aired on Living later this year. Season 3 will start in the US this Fall.

Worth renting to check out the premise, but the series really becomes compelling in Season 2.

  • It's No Seattle Grace Mercy West, But a Good 2nd Place!

Only seen the 1st 4 episodes of 'Private Practice' Season 1, so maybe a should give it more of a chance.

So far, it's no 'Grey's Anatomy'- both series written by Shonda Rhimes, but it's a good 2nd place; and still worth a watch.

'Private Practice' can still be watched without seeing 'Greys Anatomy' as although 'Grey's' fans will know about Dr Addison Montgomery's character from the mentioned series; 'Private Practice' is a spin off and can be watched in it's own right.

We see Dr. Montgomery (Kate Walsh) leave Seattle's wet climate and the fast pace that being a top surgeon brings, moving to the sunny climate of California and a much slower pace in a private clinic; where the hospital is now a 2nd stop not a 1st.

A must for 'Grey's' fans, and a 'give it a go' for newbies to Dr Addison Montgomery!

Whilst I am a big fan of Private Practice and am enjoying the series so far, I was disappointed to receive Series 1, Disc 3 in my rental to find that it only has 1 episode on it. Feels like a waste of a rental credit. :-(

I came to this series because I am a huge Grey's Anatomy fan. Private Practice hasn't let me down.

It's easy to like the characters and to get to know them better.

The storylines are similar to Grey's in that they are bittersweet and it's a really good experience to sit down and watch Private Practice.

I really recommend it, It's easy viewing which sometimes just cheers people up!

I've been a fan of Greys Anatomy from the very beginning but for some reason I never got into Private Practice. I think it may have been on at the same time as another show I watch.

However, I knew I had to watch it and I knew I had to start from the very beginning. I may be a few years late but wow, I'm so glad I rented this box set.

I loved every single episode. It's the sort of drama where you end up feeling emotionally involved with every single character. Great writing, great characters, great acting.

    I laughed, I cried, I can't wait for season 2!
