Love Ridley Scott, but this was simply dreadfulBy Teknochik (9 reviews) , 23 Mar 2013
[Highly rated reviewer]You know a film is bad when every two minutes you have the urge to turn it off, but you keep holding on because you're hoping there will be some clever twist that will redeem it,,,but it never comes. I honestly don't know how I made it to the end of this film. I even turned it off in the middle and had to come back to it because it was putting me to sleep. All the EXACT SAME things that shocked and delighted us Ridley Scott fans 30+ years ago with Alien and Aliens were rehashed in this film, but with NONE of the impact of the originals. The premise of the story with the 'genetic engineers' had such potential, which is why I held on to the end, but ultimately it turned into yet another myopic 'all aliens are evil monsters' movie. I'm sorry, but special effects (which were admittedly very good in a few places) cannot make up for the lack of substance, dangling plotlines and shallow character development. Obviously the lack of closure at the end of the film was to set us up for a sequel...but this one was so bad, I really don't care where the story is going from here. I also found the incessantly blaring score to be extremely irritating, too. Not even close to the Jerry Goldsmith (Alien) and James Horner scores (Aliens). Moral of the story: if you're going to resurrect an iconic film, make sure it's BETTER than the original... especially if it's your own work.

A Good waste of 2 hoursBy Ivorwa (29 reviews) from LYTHAM ST. ANNES , 14 Oct 2013
THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS Show review anywayHideWell, there's this bunch of reprobates, half of which haven't met the other half, none of which look like they are capable of being even chosen for a deep space mission. After a few hours, they are all bickering, drinking, or ,like the captain, playing a squeeze box or the chief scientists having it off. They hove off to visit what appears to be ancient ruins without a second thought, and duly inside, decide taking off their helmets is a good idea. Where the robot human gets a ladder to reach the ancient controls to a door is anybody's guess, but hey ho this is the movies. Don't get me wrong, this is a well directed, well photographed piece of hokum. The CGI effects are well in abundance and are seamlessly woven into action aboard the space ship - our space ship that is. Enough plot spoilers - this is a really good waste of two hours any day, and I cant wait for the sequel to this prequel. Ridley really really could have made it a little more straight down the line where we actually care about the characters - I didn't - but enjoyed it non the less.
Good, bad or indifferent.By terrybill (7 reviews) , 13 Oct 2013
THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS Show review anywayHideLiked the idea of the film but it came across badly. The performers were good, but the storyline did not do give them much to do. It seemed to lack that little something, like a decent ending. For me, it seemed to just fizzle out at the end. It left an opening for a sequel and I hope they do one and put into it what was lacking in this story: a credible story about the origin of mankind and our planet. The aliens seemed to be both god and the devil rolled into one. What where they, where did they come from, why did they create life on earth, why were they hell bent on destroying it? More questions than answers, I'm afraid.
Watch Alien insteadBy MaxineCooper (13 reviews) from Uxbridge , 06 Oct 2013
THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS Show review anywayHideThis movie promised a lot but did not deliver. After watching it I wondered what they thinking since this was done much better 34 years ago in Alien - which is well known as a sci-fi classic and as such has stood the test of time. This is an updated version and the effects are impressive, but no-one will be watching THIS in years to come. It's messy, confusing, and apart from a likeable performance by Idris Elba as the ship's captain, you really don't care when the characters start getting picked off one by one. Will not be watching the sequel!

Worth viewing.By MatthewP (5 reviews) , 04 Oct 2013I watched it all the way through and went 'oh, I see' at the end. Not a bad film. Over-rated and excessively hyped so a bit disappointing.
