Love Ridley Scott, but this was simply dreadfulBy Teknochik (9 reviews) , 23 Mar 2013
[Highly rated reviewer]You know a film is bad when every two minutes you have the urge to turn it off, but you keep holding on because you're hoping there will be some clever twist that will redeem it,,,but it never comes. I honestly don't know how I made it to the end of this film. I even turned it off in the middle and had to come back to it because it was putting me to sleep. All the EXACT SAME things that shocked and delighted us Ridley Scott fans 30+ years ago with Alien and Aliens were rehashed in this film, but with NONE of the impact of the originals. The premise of the story with the 'genetic engineers' had such potential, which is why I held on to the end, but ultimately it turned into yet another myopic 'all aliens are evil monsters' movie. I'm sorry, but special effects (which were admittedly very good in a few places) cannot make up for the lack of substance, dangling plotlines and shallow character development. Obviously the lack of closure at the end of the film was to set us up for a sequel...but this one was so bad, I really don't care where the story is going from here. I also found the incessantly blaring score to be extremely irritating, too. Not even close to the Jerry Goldsmith (Alien) and James Horner scores (Aliens). Moral of the story: if you're going to resurrect an iconic film, make sure it's BETTER than the original... especially if it's your own work.

Really disappointingBy Axeman666 (23 reviews) from Tunbridge Wells , 19 Aug 2013Started off promising but nothing interesting or unique seemed to happen. There was so much scope to make a fantastic film and the special effects were great, but the story and characters were just woeful

Alien unleashedBy a customer , 19 Aug 2013Boring and lacking pace . Few surprises and by the end I couldn't have cared less about the characters and the story .Sorry .!I have enjoyed so much of Ridley Scott in the past but this was a let-down .
Alien 5...or 7...or, who's counting?By SidJames (16 reviews) , 18 Aug 2013In short: This Alien prequel looks good, and there are a couple of decent action scenes, but the characters are flat and boring, the script clumsy, and none of the central questions raised by the narrative are answered. Basically, it's the backstory of '2001:A Space Odyssey' bolted onto the template of the first 'Alien' film, only not as good as the original. Not terrible, but disappointing in that it's another inferior sequel, rather than a decent film in it's own right.

Good effects & some choice scenesBy lastengland (102 reviews) from Winchester , 13 Aug 2013Not as scary or creepy as the other alien films, but explained where the alien came from. Some choice bits, mainly from Michael Fassbender (David). Seeing him watch a film with Peter O'Toole in & then try & initate him was classic. Perhaps not for die-hard alien fans, but nethertheless a really good enjoyable film, with good effects.
