Love Ridley Scott, but this was simply dreadful

You know a film is bad when every two minutes you have the urge to turn it off, but you keep holding on because you're hoping there will be some clever twist that will redeem it,,,but it never comes. I honestly don't know how I made it to the end of this film. I even turned it off in the middle and had to come back to it because it was putting me to sleep. All the EXACT SAME things that shocked and delighted us Ridley Scott fans 30+ years ago with Alien and Aliens were rehashed in this film, but with NONE of the impact of the originals. The premise of the story with the 'genetic engineers' had such potential, which is why I held on to the end, but ultimately it turned into yet another myopic 'all aliens are evil monsters' movie. I'm sorry, but special effects (which were admittedly very good in a few places) cannot make up for the lack of substance, dangling plotlines and shallow character development. Obviously the lack of closure at the end of the film was to set us up for a sequel...but this one was so bad, I really don't care where the story is going from here. I also found the incessantly blaring score to be extremely irritating, too. Not even close to the Jerry Goldsmith (Alien) and James Horner scores (Aliens). Moral of the story: if you're going to resurrect an iconic film, make sure it's BETTER than the original... especially if it's your own work.- Was this review helpful to you?

(337)Don't read the bad reviews!
By Greengarfy (15 reviews) , 21 May 2013I really enjoyed this film- it would have been great as a stand alone film without any link to Alien- and it didn't really need to be linked to Alien, in the end that's what probably destroyed this film as it is always going to be compared with an absolute classic. Well worth a watch, just don't go into it thinking of it as a prequel to Alien.- Was this review helpful to you?

Don't compare it with Alien
By captaincompass (3 reviews) from Hitchin , 16 May 2013I can see why it's hard not to compare this movie with the all time classic. I loved this film and it had a subtle way of building up the tension the special effects were brilliant. Was v disappointed by at least three of the characters. The biologist, the captain and the punk rocker. Also felt Android David was too obviously a traitor - he lacked subtlety. Wish I had seen it at the cinema despite its flaws.- Was this review helpful to you?

Why oh why was this not a masterpiece?
By Maintosh (20 reviews) from Montrose, Scotland , 15 May 2013I was gutted I didn't make it to the cinema to watch this. In hindsight, i'm glad I missed it. I love the Alien trilogy and I love pretty much all Ridley Scott films. But sadly, this didn't live up to the hype. It just all seemed a bit familiar. The characters were cold and unlikeable. Visually impressive but you take that as a given nowadays. I thought of 'Hal' when i watched it, I thought of 'Alien' when I watched it, I thought of 'Sunshine' when I watched it. I shouldn't have been thinking of other characters and other films. I should have been absorbed by it in its own right, but sadly if fell flat for me and I'm gutted for the second time.- Was this review helpful to you?
