Starts well but goes nowhere
By Motta80 from West Sussex , 18 Aug 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
This film is loaded with intrigue but sadly never delivers on expectations.
It looks limited by its budget but if it were as good a concept that truly showed the director's future promise (like Chris Nolan's Following) then this could be overlooked.
Unfortunately Bryan Singer's debut (written by Chris McQuarrie who also wrote Singer's Usual Suspects) does seem to know what it's trying to say or be.
It's odd but not as necessarily bizarre as David Lynch. It's intriguing but not as riveting as M Night Shyamalan.
The set up is fine and the lead actor, Ron Marquette, plays the mystery of his character well. You are suspicious of him but want to know whats going on.
Singer keeps you following for a while but it soon becomes clear that its not going anywhere. No motivations are given for the lead (or any) character. No explanation of the events is given and there is no satisfactory denouement.
For Singer devotees and the overly curious only.- Was this review helpful to you?

What was all that about?
By a customer from Darlington England , 28 Jun 2007A low budget film in every respect. The opening sequence of a freight van travelling through a glorious autumn landscape while the credits roll goes on interminably, and might be a metaphor for the whole film. The van, like the film, goes nowhere very slowly and without any explanation. The characters are well drawn but shallow, and have no discernable motivation. After a promising beginning the story line peters out, people are murdered for no very obvious reason, and there is one of those arty-farty closing sequences which is supposed to underline the by-line on the box - don't talk to strangers. The whole thing is a muddle, like a first draft for a much better film that might have been.- Was this review helpful to you?

Interesting Anarchic Film
By Brian Faulkner from Bridgwater, England , 07 Dec 2006An interesting proposition, but it's been done before in a more spectacular way. I recommend Max Von Sydow in Needful Things if you really want to see a happy carefree community destroyed. This was a pale imitation. Good try though.- Was this review helpful to you?

Strange, yes, watchable, definately!
By Louis Menzies from London, England , 20 Jan 2005Very strange film, but the brilliant Kevin Spacey choose to work with Bryan Singer on THE USUAL SUSPECTS after watching this, and it was Singer's first feature (only what I've been told), then if you're a fan of his work and you haven't seen it, watch it!- Was this review helpful to you?
