Pulp Fiction

Quentin Tarantino's blockbuster follow-up to RESERVOIR DOGS is a breathtaking tribute to old dime store novels about small time hoods and dangerous criminals. It features deftly woven plotlines, creating a mythic Los Angeles underworld of drug dealers, molls, affable hitmen, restaurant-robbing lovers, and a boxer out to scam the mob on his last professional bout. This is the film that put John Travolta back on the map as a major box-office draw in the '90s and officially established Samuel L. Jackson as a superstar. It also inspired a seemingly endless slew of imitators.

While not as abrasive or compelling as Reservoir Dogs, this follow-up not only confirmed Quentin Tarantino's genius for writing hard-boiled comic dialogue, but also demonstrated a control over a wealth of characters and crossplots that was simply astonishing for a film-maker still, essentially, in the process of learning his trade. Originally entitled Black Mask, the picture went on to scoop the Palme d'Or at the Cannes film festival and win Oscars for Tarantino and his co-writer Roger Avary. Scorching though the writing is, it needed a high-calibre cast to carry it off. Uma Thurman, Bruce Willis, Maria de Medeiros and Christopher Walken are excellent, but the revitalised John Travolta and the then largely unknown Samuel L Jackson are unforgettable. As much pop as pulp, this is exhilarating stuff and clearly one of the best films of the 1990s.

Clever, witty, violent celebration of junk culture, drawing rather too heavily on past thrillers but blessed with some excellent performances which crackle with menace.

    Breathtaking

Propulsive in-your-face salute to film noir with a Nineties slant with savvy filmmaking from auteur Tarantino interweaving three tales of crime, sex, greed and O. Henry sensibility mixed with Murphy's Law.

What can one say that hasn't been said about 'Pulp Fiction': the dialogue is fresh, the narrative is brilliant, the acting is superlative, etc. All these praises are merely opinions, but one has to be completely ignorant to deny the influential aspects of 'Pulp Fiction.' A film that was the catalyst for the independent film generation. It is the film that defied Hollywood's preconceived notion--that all films needed to be moulded from an archetype. 'Pulp Fiction' reinvigorated a genre inept, and bereft of creativity. Simply put, 'Pulp Fiction' is the best film of the 90's; much like 'Citizen Kane' is regarded as the best film of all time. Both films cinematic aspects can be argued, but one would be hard pressed to deny the level of their influence.

    Masterstroke from QT

QT’s script intertwines 4 stories with beautiful brilliance from start to finish. Tarantino does away with the familiar, chronological timeline used by most movies as Pulp Fiction jumps back and forth within the linear sequence of the film whilst also skipping in between the 4 different stories being portrayed. It sounds very confusing but Tarantino pulls this concept off in a way which not only works but succeeds in a way which is arguably better than had the movie began at “A” and worked it’s way through to “Z”.

Jules (Jackson) and Vincent (Travolta) are 2 hitmen working for Marsellus Wallace (Rhames) who are sent to retrieve a suitcase stolen from their emplyer. Vincent is also asked by Wallace to show his wife, Mia (Thurman), a good time and keep her company whilst he is out of town on business. Butch Collidge(Willis) is a boxer who is paid by Wallace to throw a fight in his favour and Pumpkin and Honey Bunny are 2 small time crooks that hold up a diner.

Some of the finest scenes in the film are filled with apparently irrelvant but nonetheless intriguing and absorbing dialgoue as Tarantino shows what he is best at – script writing.

The 4 seemingly unrelated stories cross paths as this modernday masterpiece unravels in a sensational, mesmerizing and truly Tarantino style.

Moonlighting (1985-1989) In the mid 1980s Walter Willis landed a lead role on prime time television, ditched his first name and became household heartthrob Bruce Willis. The prolonged on-screen sexual tension Bruce shared with his co-star Cybill Shepherd lasted for five steamy years, much to the delight of fans everywhere. However, in 1989 the show took a nose dive after its writers succumbed to fans’ wishes and made the on-screen duo official. In the closing episode of Moonlighting,... Read more
