A complex film that I didn't fully understand!

A lot of Japanese horror films are very easliy followed and understood by us westerners. This isn't one of them! In found myself completely confused by the storyline, the events and the ending. But despite all that I was left with an incredible sense of the meaning behind it all, the message the director intended to get across. Loneliness and isolation are the themes explored by this film, it's not a scary movie; there are no shocks and thrills, no gore. It does a fantastic job of asking the viewer to consider their own views and beliefs on life and death. The specific details of the plot are very difficult to pin down, perhaps I need to watch it a few more times to see if I can figure it all out. But I don't really think that matters.
At first I was very surprised by this film as it's highly rated by many and was expecting something along the lines of the Ringu/Ju-on style films. It's nothing like these films and interestingly I am getting to like this film more and more as time goes on. It's not a film that you can take in on the night of watching it, rather something that slowly seeps through and you suddenly realise what all the fuss is about.
