For his directorial debut Oscar-winning special effects genius Stan Winston stayed on safe ground with this EC Comic inspired dark horror morality tale showcasing one of his best monster creations. Well-cast Lance Henriksen invokes an ancient witch curse to resurrect the demon Pumpkinhead to take vengeance on the vacationing bikers who killed his son. The smoky backwoods ambience and several plot twists paper over some plodding and under-characterised exposition, and the gore murders are of a standard issue nature. But Winston's creature is as awesomely frightening and brilliantly constructed and offers more than enough feral scream-lined chills to thrill along to. The sequel The Revenge of Pumpkinhead — Blood Wings followed in 1994.

    What a load of rubbish

This film is terrible, everything about it sucks if I could rate it with no stars I would.

I love old cheesy horrors but this was total pants.

    Doesn't have a pumpkin as a head

Despite breaking the biggest sin of horror film-making, revealing the killer, Pumpkinhead still manages to tell a decent horror story, even though the chills are lacking because of this.

Despite having a cast of characters that aren't likeable, apart from the child's father, this film still manages to tell a decent horror story.

The visuals and the location add a lot to the sinister atmosphere, and although it's just another paint by numbers job, Pumpkinhead is well worth your attention.

I'd go as far to say it's a decent horror story.
