For his directorial debut Oscar-winning special effects genius Stan Winston stayed on safe ground with this EC Comic inspired dark horror morality tale showcasing one of his best monster creations. Well-cast Lance Henriksen invokes an ancient witch curse to resurrect the demon Pumpkinhead to take vengeance on the vacationing bikers who killed his son. The smoky backwoods ambience and several plot twists paper over some plodding and under-characterised exposition, and the gore murders are of a standard issue nature. But Winston's creature is as awesomely frightening and brilliantly constructed and offers more than enough feral scream-lined chills to thrill along to. The sequel The Revenge of Pumpkinhead — Blood Wings followed in 1994.

    What a load of rubbish

This film is terrible, everything about it sucks if I could rate it with no stars I would.

I love old cheesy horrors but this was total pants.

    Anyone for pie?

I got this out as nostalgia for my boyf who said it was very good. And to my surprise, it ain't half bad, and believe me, I could do a degree in rubbish old horrors. For a film made in 1987 the effects are really OK - especially the demon/alien creature - and it has a certain, atmospheric charm about it (in a B movie horror way). The much underated Lance Henrikson is great (as usual) and the plot, although not terribly exciting (it is supposed to have a twist, but you can guess it on your way across the living room to stick the bloody film in the DVD player), does it's job and much blood-letting ensues. It is a load of old pie really, but quite an enjoyable little morsel and worth a slice. Plus my flatmate thought it was s**t, so it must be good (see my other film reviews)!
