After directing minor classics such as To Kill a Mockingbird and Love with the Proper Stranger, Robert Mulligan's career began its sharp decline with this clichéd, hopelessly dated story of a disenchanted hippy who rejects the life style of his affluent Manhattan family. Michael Sarrazin's life goes wrong — he kills someone in an auto accident, goes to jail, gets embroiled in a knifing and then thinks he should escape and hop over the Canadian border, like any self-respecting draft dodger. Barbara Hershey is his girlfriend and there's a song, repeated often, by Randy Newman.
