Most helpful review Quantum of Solace

  • Ticks all the right boxes, but not as good as Casino Royale

This is a good Bond film, better than all Brosnan's film hands down, although Quantum of Solace isn't as polished as Casino Royale. The villians and the bond girls aren't as memorable as in Royale, but Craig and Dench are on top form, with Dench being given a welcome extented role. The action scenes although good, are just a carbon copy of the latest Bourne film, which is a shame as Bond doesn't need to copy the Bourne films, as he has his legacy to look up to.

Don't expect any invisable cars, cheesy one-liners or any raised eye brows, as this Bond is more like the Terminator rather than a posh, martini drinking spy. That said, the story is really good and continues Bonds investigation of the dark organisation that killed Vesper. And know doubt, Bonds investigation into this organisation will play an important role in the next film which I look forward in seeing. I hope they get a Chris Nolan (The Dark Knight) to direct the next one, as I think he'll introduce some new intersting concepts to the Bond franchise. Overall solid entertainment.

Two beautiful women (including Gemma Arterton), fast car chases, the inclusion of the Siena Palio in one sequence. Baddies and double crosses. Exotic locations from Haiti to South American. It’s all here. My only grip is that we don’t see that Daniel Craig torso as much as I’d like and he doesn’t come out of the sea in slow motion. But you can’t have it all! A sequel from ‘Casino’ Royale’.

can not say much about it. Do not like the new bond films. As this was a faulty disc not sure what I was watching. The action sequences seem to be long and made up of quick flashes.

Lots of action, but not much of a plot. Did not find it particularly interesting or exciting to watch. Just about watchable.

A big car chase with extra foot chases and some fighting. Not really a spy film. No character development at all. Big let down from Casino Royale but still it is Bond and still very watchable.

Yeah, well, Quantum of Solace is the first (and possibly last) Bond movie which is actually a direct sequel to the one that went before. Casino Royale redefined Bond for the modern age, making it grittier and darker (and dare I say more realistic?). It had a very different narrative structure, delighting some and enraging others who still pined for more gadgets and tongue-in-cheek action. Well, Quantum picks up where Casino leaves off… literally. Less than an hour has passed between films and QoS is effectively the continuation of the story. It tries its best to be ‘self-contained’ and you certainly can watch it without watching Casino Royale first (but I would recommend that you don’t). And it’s all good stuff. If follows the style of Casino Royale closely and most should be satisfied. However, whereas Casino Royale was met with pretty much universal praise, Quantum was labelled with phrases like ‘Taking its foot off the pedal.’ Casino Royale had an epic feel to it, whereas Quantum holds the – debateable – title of ‘shortest ever James Bond film.’ Therefore it feels less like a film in its own right and more like an afterthought for Casino Royale. It’s a good spy thriller and, if you’re a fan of the ‘new style’ James Bond that Daniel Craig is taking the franchise, then you’ll probably like it too. However, Casino Royale was a tough act to follow and QoS doesn’t really live up to it. Luckily, reviewing this after seeing its successor – Skyfall – it’s only a temporary set-back. Skyfall even eclipses Casino Royale.
