The second in Hammer's Quatermass trilogy is a potent, low-budget roller coaster ride through government conspiracies and alien invasions, set against the chilling backdrop of postwar new town paranoia. Great writing by Nigel Kneale (based on his original BBC TV serial), superb direction by Val Guest and Gerald Gibbs's stark black-and-white photography make this British classic one of the best science-fiction allegories of the 1950s.

    Classic B&W Science Fiction

This is an excellent example of classic black and white science fiction. It's real edge-of-the-seat stuff and far surpasses most modern science fiction with it's big budgets and predictable plots. The only let down is when we see the aliens at the end - they look like bad Doctor Who monsters - it would have worked far better if they were kept off screen and the viewer's imagination allowed to do it's work.

Quatermass 2 is a big improvement on the Quatermass Experiment - the science is less silly, the plot is more tense, gritty and involving and the production values are much higher.

The disc itself is a bit of a let down though. The picture is very dark and murky and it's often difficult to make out detail. Also the special features are a bit thin (commentary, very short interview and trailer).

Still creepy after all these years...

A bigger budget and wider scope over the first film makes this an enjoyable fast paced romp. The storyline is a classic, and variations of it appear in a range of other sci-fi serials (such as Dr Who's Spearhead from Space). Another reason I like these sort of films is that they were made at a time of naive optimism, when people believed that the colonisation of space was just around the corner and that Britain would be playing a part in it! Also nice to see Sid James playing an almost serious role! One let down is the DVD transfer itself, dark scenes appear grainy in places.

Cracking film, shame about the picture quality

An excellent film about an alien invasion of earth. Aliens that can take over and control human minds, with no morales, who would think nothing of killing you simply to use your body as raw material to buy them more time. Old hat now maybe, but not so at the time. Also starring Sid James in one of his rare straight roles, this is a great film, made on a tight budget, but made well. The only down side to this is that it seems that little or no effort has been made to 'clean up' the picture and in some scenes it is quite poor. Also the bitrate used is not high enough (IMO) and at only 3.7gb in size there is no excuse for this even on a standard DVD.

    classic si-fi

Good old fashion si-fi, aliens trying to takeover the world.Watch-out for Sid James who playes the roll of a drunken reporter.

Not the best of the Quatermass films, but still worth watching.

    Classic alien plot

Excellent story but the picture quality is very dark and murky in some scenes. Acting was good with some well known faces (Sid James in a straight role). Overall a very good sci fi film for its day.

This is a old film and some would seem outdated ... but the spills of quatermass is a enjoyable one end the plot pretty much as you would seem for a classic 1970s b/w movie .. not many special effects but lots of laughs a the carpet monster

    Quatermass 2

This Film is one of the best black and white films I have seen. Although the special effects are tacky and cheesey the plot and storyline are thrilling and very good.

    Old but watchable

Definitely not 'Plan 9', the story concerns insidious alien invasion and government secrecy. In spite of looking very dated, the action is continous and keeps you waiting to see what happens next. The absence of modern slick special effects does not detract from the story, and what effects there are look better than the sequences of the Martian stampedes in 'Quatermass and the Pit'. There is also no tedious sub plot to spin things out.

Excellent Science Fiction without the need for fancy special effects

This film is a classic. Good storyline, excellent build-up of tension, and some really credible acting. It doesn't matter at all that the special effects are lacking, because the film rises above that. And all in glorious monochrome !

    Watch and ENJOY !
