Not your average costume drama!
By ThursdayNext from Warwickshire , 31 Mar 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
A well-made, good-looking, intelligent costume drama with lashings of sex and violence.
Historically accurate? Of course not, but that wouldn't be nearly as much fun. Geoffrey Rush is gloriously over the top as the imprisoned Marquis, Michael Caine perhaps slightly less convincing as his sadistic and hypocritical nemesis.
The sets are marvellous and Kate Winslet and Joaquin Phoenix are excellent as a doomed laundry maid who helps the Marquis and the repressed Abbe she falls for.
This really has everything - action, drama, humour, romance - with some meaningful points to make about writing, freedom and influence as well.- Was this review helpful to you?

(67)Oddly enjoyable
By a customer , 25 Apr 2013I can't quite put my finger on why I liked this so much. I expected it to be either over-the top bawdy or overly arty, and it's a bit of both but ends up, for me, as a quality, fabulous looking, quirky but intriguingly endearing look at the life and incarceration of the Marquis de Sade. I think some viewers might be expecting more sex than is shown, but it's about obsessions and desires and individuality as much as the physical side of life in that era. Geoffrey Rush is fantastic in this, and Joaqiun Phoenix and Kate Winslet look so young and gorgeous. I'm shocked that it's taken me 13 years to get around to seeing it. There is gore and nudity, and it's said to be very historically inaccurate but it's prompted me to investigate the Marquis de Sade in more detail and I'd rather have a film that still has me interested once it's over than something that's instantly forgotten. This film is a delight to be savoured, but won't be to everyone's taste.- Was this review helpful to you?

Dull ... not for me!
By a customer , 11 Nov 2012I can't see why previous reviewers seemed so enthralled with this film. I did not stay the course as I found it boring with very little in the way of a decent story. The film seemed to heading into oblivion when I hit the eject button.
In a nutshell, I was disappointed as 'Quills' boasted a great cast ... indeed, I was left wondering why the likes of Winslet, Caine and Pheonix involved themselves with it.
Needless to say, I wouldn't recommend 'Quills'- Was this review helpful to you?

By a customer , 13 Jul 2012Strange, slightly distrubing but great enterainment! I honestly thought i wasn't going to like this movie but i thought it was very good. There were parts that made me laugh and parts that made me cringe, all in all good job.- Was this review helpful to you?
