Anthony Valentine stars as the debonair A.J. Raffles who is constantly in demand as a house guest on English country estates at the turn of the century. What his hosts don't realise is that Raffles is also an accomplished jewel thief and safe-cracker. 'The First Step' sees Raffles meeting up with old schoolmate Bunny Manders, with one of the great partnerships of all time being forged. In 'A Costume Piece', Reuben Rosenthall is an unattractive self-made millionaire, making him a natural target for Raffles. In 'The Spoils of Sacrilege', poor Bunny is still a comparative innocent when it comes to expecting the unexpected. 'The Gold Cup' sees Raffles setting out to prove that he is not the thief the police, society and the Criminologists Club are trying to track down. 'Chest of Silver' sees Bunny wishing that Raffles would warn him when he was going to break all the laws in the land - and explain why.

I rented this DVD primarily for my wife, who has always liked Anthony Valentine. His portrayal of a typical English gentleman, and rogue, leaves others standing. As a gentleman thief he makes the role his own overcoming the sometimes weak story line.

Odd affair

In fact the whole series is rather creaky from every point of view, acting, production, script - not to mention the cringe-making title sequence. Perhaps it all reflects the singular atmosphere of the original and the odd, awkward feeling that it is really all primarily about the loaded relationship between Raffles and Bunny, his former school fag, rather than aristocratic burglary, gentlemen cricketers or any other Victorian eccentricities .

Anthony Valentine is ultimate gentleman burgler, a sort modern victorian Robin Hood. Entertaining stuff

Very like the books

These episodes and the character are very faithful to the books. I enjoyed them, having just read Raffles, but not sure if I would have enjoyed them otherwise - a bit dated.
