    [Highly rated reviewer]

I was worried about this after its universal slating on MDB's discussion boards, but it actually turned out pretty well.

True, it is a poor adaptation of the book, keeping only the basic set-up and the name and background of the 'hero', but as a stand-alone thriller it works very well.

I hadn't heard of the director before but he does a good job and shows an interestingly off-beat visual style. Kippei Shiina makes an appealing, charismatic hero even if the screenplay leaves out most of his back-story.

Gary Oldman is a bit shouty and OTT but what's new there?

Gary Oldman must have needed the money.

Romance angle gets in the way, with the last 20 mins or so (long smouldering shots with little happening or being said) being particularly annoying.

  • Cool, Slick killer

John Rain is a cool killer. It is cool slick and fast. It even has romance side to it. Which i found a little cheesie but sweet that the killer has a nice side. The film plays with who you identify with. I enjoyed it and would recommend.

  • Awful

This film was awful. Most of the speech was in Japanese with subtitles, the rest very poor English. The plot/story line was odd to say the least. A total waste of time. My advice would be don't bother.

What's not to like? Yes, it's 90% subtitled, but the actors are mainly Japanese and it takes place in Japan.

If you like the books, you'll like this too.

I'm not sure what Gary Oldman is doing, but he's done better work. The rest of the cast do their stuff. I read one review saying that Oldman was the only one showing any emotion. Japanese people aren't huge on gushing their feelings out, so it works if you know what you're looking at.

  • A postcard from Japan

An often beautifully shot film with Gary Oldman hilariously over the top as the CIA boss and Akira Emoto also a great comic turn as a bemused and laconic Japanese detective. The storyline is complete pants tho' and Shiina and Shimizu aren't convincing, at times seeming to have wandered in from a much slower and also not very convincing Japanese melodrama. Avoid if you are looking for an action movie but well worth your time and a couple of beers for the visual images, Oldman and Emoto.
