  • Evil society or evil characters?

    [Highly rated reviewer]

The film sets up an interesting story around a Nazi era actress and her enticement of a 'plain Joe' sports reporter. The actress is a drug addict, and is kept in thrall by a sinister doctor and her associates. The reporter tries to expose them, but they kill his gilfriend and the actress in response. He gives up when the police show no interest, and goes back to reporting football matches. Unfortunately, Fassbinder seems more interested in the corruption of the characters and the depiction of a kitsch luxury than in the development of a story. The ending is particularly disturbing, and leaves the viewer with an unpleasant feeling of evil triumphing.
