A Major Triumph
By Dayofthedead33 from DERBYSHIRE , 14 May 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
A true Ken Loach classic - made in his trademark docu-drama style.
Bruce Jones plays Bob, a man out of work struggling to find the money to buy his daughter's communion dress. When he gets the money from a local loan shark, it isn't long before he misses a payment and the loan shark and his men come looking for him. Jones is a million miles from Les Battersby in Coronation Street.
A brilliant film that beautifully combines humour, with powerful emotion. There really are some truly comic moments.
Ricky Tomlinson is fantastic as Bob's mate Tommy. Also out of work, looking for any opportunity to bring home a few quid.
A follow up of sorts to the also brilliant Riff Raff.
Ken Loach again proves that he is one of the foremost filmakers around today.
This will make you cry with laughter in one instant, then let you witness raw emotion in the next.- Was this review helpful to you?

(24)Another great gritty film from Mr Loach.
By gingerspike (414 reviews) from Grimsby , 04 May 2012A realistic, bleak, yet very funny drama portraying (as ever) working-class lives in the north of England. The film is shot in Loach's typical docu-drama style and has a great cast.- Was this review helpful to you?

The First Five Minutes!
By a customer , 26 Sep 2011Ater the last miserable DVD -Life is Sweet-I was looking forward to watching this with this promising cast but no.
Having watched the first 5 minutes I ejected the disc and put it back in the envelope in disgust
Perhaps I didn't give it a fair viewing but I could imagine what the rest of the film was going to be like and didn't want to waste another hour or so - I felt utterly misled by the preview
This type of film should be free-it is more than 40 years old!!!1- Was this review helpful to you?

raining stones
By daisymaisy (51 reviews) from Tonbridge , 25 Jun 2011Another very powerful film directed in true Ken Loach nitty - gritty, no nonsense style. Superb acting by all involved. You really feel for the characters, so obviously down on their luck, already living in impoverished circumstances, with high crime and unemployment.
If you are a fan of Ken Loach, as I am, you won't be disappointed.- Was this review helpful to you?

A subtly gritty English fairytale
By movie_maverick (10 reviews) from London , 08 Jun 2011A light-hearted film that subtly touches on real-life issues of unemployment, poverty, debt, dreamlessness, petty crime, etc. in a Northern English setting. A delightful story and a good laugh. Worth a watch.- Was this review helpful to you?
