Titanic director James Cameron shares the scriptwriting duties with star Sylvester Stallone in this explosive action sequel, directed by George Pan Cosmatos. The result is entertaining if implausible as Stallone flexes his muscles for some cartoon-like heroics, rescuing American prisoners in Vietnam but discovering that he's considered as expendable as the men he's trying to save. All this might be thought laughable, but it comes across as deadly serious and, therefore, rather scary. It was a bit of a come-down for Cameron following the previous year's massive sleeper hit The Terminator, which he directed.

Much better than I thought it would be!

I can vaguely remember seeing this years ago, but it must have been after a skin full of beer, because my recollections are fairly hazy. I saw First Blood Part I again fairly recently, really enjoyed it, and thought I ought to see the sequel again too. I wasn't expecting too much, because whilst the reviews I had read really praised Part I, they were all fairly scathing of Part II. Anyway I was glad I did, because it turned out, against all expectation, to be a really enjoyable movie.

Yes, the Rambo character was way OTT, but that's the whole point of the film. The action sequences were stunning for their time, the violence and bloodshed was suitably gratuitous and there was plenty of tension to keep the adrenalin pumping. Some of the Americanized philosophizing was a bit much, but at least the point Stallone was trying to inarticulately make fairly valid.

The disc was only OK - certainly nothing special. The picture looked like it was too softly focused. I think this was meant to be the haze and steam of a damp jungle setting, but it ended up just looking a bit odd. The sound was fine. There were also plenty of extras, but it was a case of quantity over quality and there was quite a bit of repetition.

    Overall, well worth a viewing!

2 Gut Or Not To Gut? That Is Rambos Question.

Being a Chuck Norris, Missing In Action 3 fan i should of loved this. But was dissapointed when it never added anything new to the P.O.W. rescue story, or the character of Rambo. Plus you never got to see the bad guys do anything bad, which really annoyed me as the guy you really wanted to see gutted, (you know who i mean), gets to walk away. Rambo should of flatlined him there and then. Rent this for lots of explosions, Guns, and Knives. Who needs a plot anyway.
