This is probably the worst film in the Rambo series, with Sylvester Stallone transforming from slightly confused loner to the Free World's white knight. Reluctantly giving up his blissfully mystic life in Thailand (hilariously parodied in Hot Shots! Part Deux) to go on one more mission, he seemingly takes on the entire Soviet army in Afghanistan when his old boss (Richard Crenna) is taken prisoner. If cartoon action is your bag, then this has it by the bucketful, but the mindless celebration of carnage leaves a nasty taste in the mouth.

    OK

Its worth a watch just to finish off the trilogy.

Its an OK film, but nothing you will probably rush out and buy.

    Putting the world to rights.

Oh dear. So much spent to produce so little. A masterclass on how to waste a film companies money to produce something with no substance, bad dialogue and farcical plot.

A severe disappointment after the first two films.

    Rambo III - Part Deux

Rambo III is one big long mistake. Originally to be directed by Russell Mulcahy (Highlander) he was replaced after two weeks, and over one weekend, by the 2nd unit director. Oops! What results is an almighty mess of a movie which changes direction several times due to the difference in directing styles. Mulcahy has one. McDonald doesn't. There are big problems with the script too. It changes to a self parody about half way through when everyone realises it isn't working straight. I would love to get my hands on this picture's negatives. It all needs recutting. The Russian soldiers' subtitles are banal and irrelevent, we don't need to know what they are saying when it doesn't further the plot. Richard Crenna is ludicrous as a Green Beret and the thought of the US sending him into afghanistan is almost as laughable as John Wayne in Viet Nam in The Green Berets. A simple job of replacing the lead Russian's subtitled dialogue with something credible and a scissors taken to some irrelevent scenes could quicken the pace and actually improve this movie and give it an extra star in the ratings. As it stands it is slow, uneven and laughable in places. You have to hand it to Crenna for lampooning himself in Hot Shots! Part Deux! but after Rambo III did he really need to?
