LOVEFiLM Review Rampart

  • 4 stars out of 5

Woody Harrelson should have received an Oscar nod for his role as a corrupt cop in Rampart.

  • How dull T.V. and Cinema would be if the LAPD were honest.

A bland and meandering character study. Woody Harrelson does stuff we've all seen Michael Chiklis do in The Shield. The trouble is that here things are boring, unfocused and ultimately directionless, oh, and there's some toe sucking.

It was a nice idea to dedicate the film to the victims of the LAPDs notoriously brutal Rampart Division, but really they should have just made a film about that rather than this nonsense. For all its intensity this just feels pointless.

One of the most boring films ever created! A bit like when your expecting the finest camembert, but instead are served with a mouldy cheddar. This film leaves a bad after taste!

Woody Harrelson, (who is never off screen) gives a wonderful portrayal of a really nasty man who tramps on the law rather than upholds it. He has love only for his two daughters and this is the only time that the unrelieved evil of the character is challenged. By the end a a bit of a hard watch.

  • If i had an hour of my life left I'd watch this movie, at least then it would feel like an extra day or two.

This wasn't a movie, this was nonsense personified. The script was quip for quip unintelligible nonsense and the plot devices such as Dave's use of cigarettes as appetite suppression was overdone and not backed up. The ongoing conflict with his daughters and wife hardly escalated, leaving little room for character development. This wasn't a movie, it was a hostage situation.

Don't be persuaded by all the talk of 'Woody's finest role to date'. This film, although being quite well-made is incredibly dull, slow, long and painful.

To call this a thriller, is misleading to say the least. There are no thrills, very little plot, and quite frankly, you just don't care about anyone in the film. For this kind of film to work the viewer needs to have some empathy with main character. He does nothing to deserve it in this.

One of the worst films I've seen in a long, long while.

(Oh, and the trailer bears absolutely no resemblance to the actual film at all!)
