This artily shot and well-acted film is certainly evocative, but ultimately it's dull. Although bookended by two shocking events, there is next to no plot inbetween. Just the continued theme of disease and decay on a Scottish housing estate.
As a sort of grim tone-poem, it works well enough. However, I thought it struggled to maintain interest over 90 minutes.
(Incidentally, there are no subtitles on this DVD, so if you're struggling to follow the accents, you're out of luck.)- Was this review helpful to you?

(42)don't waste your time, just watch 'Cathy Come Home'
By Angel26 (74 reviews) from Chorley , 01 May 2013Utter depressing rot.....could only stomach 15 minutes. I lived through the late 50s,60s and 70s as a child/teenager and don't want to watch it all again. this has the look feel and depressing tone of a badly filmed documentary, nil in the way of bdialogue other than a few mumbled Glaswegian grunts- AWFUL- Was this review helpful to you?

A subtle film about the road into adulthood for a young boy.
By a customer , 07 Oct 2012To some this may come across as lacking in meaningful script or plot. However I feel the real power of this film is the understated and touching way the relationships the boy has with his family and other children are portrayed.- Was this review helpful to you?

Simply awful
By markharrison04 (19 reviews) , 26 Aug 2012This is the first film from Loveflm that I have switched off before the end. In fact, I only got through 20 minutes and that was enough for me.- Was this review helpful to you?

Gritty Life
By buffyrules (335 reviews) from southend on sea , 18 Jun 2012Theres no doubting Ramsey's talent which is clearly on display here. Its a hard watch with occasional breaks from the norm. It's hard hitting but displays the director's eye for beauty and inventive camera work.- Was this review helpful to you?

Ratcatcher review
By Jumoak (14 reviews) , 23 Apr 2012Original and uncomfortable viewing with a bleakness that is punctuated by moments of true visual beauty and moments of warmth.
Definitely one to watch for anyone with an interest in modern British film.- Was this review helpful to you?
