What's this — a cheery cannibal comedy? Priest director Antonia Bird's stunning mix of gut-spilling gore and Carry On-style banter is a shocker that you'll either love for its edgy tone, or absolutely hate because it's so in-your-face. Inspired by the tragic Donner Pass disaster of 1846-7, the film stars Robert Carlyle as a devious maneater who decimates the inhabitants of a mountain outpost to keep human flesh on his winter menu. Containing as many surprises as Scream and all the hilarity of Austin Powers, Bird's highly disturbing and thought-provoking film features a couple of impeccable performances. Carlyle etches the strongest portrait of pure evil since Anthony Hopkins in The Silence of the Lambs, while Guy Pearce is equally brilliant as the army captain who tries to stop Carlyle's bloodthirsty exploits before he becomes addicted to the same diet. The insane climax is yet another off-kilter delight in this intensely hilarious chiller.

Brilliant! Great story, great ending, great acting, great gore! Great music (by Damien Albarn!)! This film will put a big grin across your face.
I'm just a bit worried, because it makes human flesh look quite edible. In a nice big stew. Or a thai curry... Tastes just like chicken... ssssss.
I really liked this film. It is out of the ordinary, twisted, humourous and has stunning photography.
It is a little ponderous at times, but don't be fooled as it is sucking you into the plot, helped with a "spooky" sound track!
Robert Carlyle was brilliant in a twisted way and the rest of the cast made the very most of their roles.
This is not a chick-flick, but if you ever wondered what it would be like to see someone you don't like in a stew pot, this makes a good starter!
This film is really good. I loved it, its so funny and the music score(by Damon Albarn) is really unusual and makes the film so unique. I totally loved this film, there is no other movie like it, and the acting is great, I don't get why it didn't do better at the box office or why its so unheard of. Its really entertaining.
Ravenous, appeared on the shelves of my local DVD store without flourish or announcement.
But seeing that it contained Robert Carlisle and Guy Pearce (who'd recently managed a great performance in Memento)I thought I'd give it a crack.
A deeply dark film set in a dark era this film exudes atmosphere, and while, as the other chap says it isn't a true horror, its certainly scary enough. No its difficult, part horror, thriller and dark comedy the film is difficult to 'genre-lise' in that way. But it does well to provide aspects that cover all three.
One of the best films I've ever seen.
A great, twisted, rich meaty, darkly comic film. More thriller than horror, with great performances from Robert Carlyle, Guy Pearce, and the other stellar cast members. Witty script, and a great musical score from Michael Nyman and Damon Albarn. Highly recommend you get your teeth into this gem!

I remember seeing this film on the big screen with my Dad a few years back and I remember our initial reaction at the start of the film. We thought we'd picked the runt of the litter!!! But then, given a little time, this film worked it's magic. Although it's classed as a horror, this film is not your average horror flick - in fact, it's really rather funny (which I think was probably the original intention). Robert Carlyle plays a really great 'baddie' ... I guarantee that it is a film unlike any other - go on, give it a go!

Captain John Boyd (Guy Pearce)is sent to a remote military outpost during the US civil war . Not a stranger to combat , he finds himself investigating the disappearance of a group of people which leads him into a nightmarish fight for survival as he is pitted against the cannibalistic Robert Carlyle.
Fast , tense , dark , extremely suspenseful and with a great soundtrack from Michael Nyman and Damon Albarn , this movie shocker delivers on so many levels and most definitely snuck under the mainstream radar. Watch it with your girlfriend and hear her scream.
..the music is awfull - really jarring, I blame Damon Albarn as it's not Nymans style.
'Ravenous' is a superb horror film with a very dark sense of humour. Anyone after a genuinely entertaining and original (not to mention gruesome) horror movie should give this a try. It features some great acting and music, and will shock and make you laugh at the same time. Recommended for horror fans looking for something different, but this may not be everyone's cup of tea. Still very good, though.
After reading the Radio Times review at the top of the page, I was expecting some horror comedy cum farce, not the case, in fact I'd go so far as to say that reviewer shoots far too wide of the mark. Sure there are whitty moments, robert carlyle plays his role with obvious glee and David Arquette does his wacky weird thing that we've seen him do so many times before but I think the story is the winner.
I found myself comparing Ravenous to a Richard Laymon / Dean Koontz pulp horror novel, to those of you who've never read such material, it can be easy explained by saying it was written / directed by someone clearly having fun writing the script and giggling as they write the twists, turns and gore aplenty rather than some of the stuffy all to serious writings of some of the more pretentious horror writers.
I really enjoyed the different sections of the film, rather that just revolving around one scenario the film dragged the cannible plot back and forth abit creating ,what i thought was, a fun ride.
You'll enjoy Ravenous, its a kooky little oddball but a well made one though i have to say the soundtrack is the most annoying garbage i've heard in a long while, Mr Albarn disappearing completley up his own colon...again ;)

Grisly drama that veers between black comedy and horror while remaining an unappetizing stew.
