There is a reason why other musicians nicknamed Ray Charles 'The Genius' and this brief but fairly detailed documentary shows why. Thre is enough music to please fans and enough information to please biographers. A good complement to the soon to be released biopic 'Ray'. The music is what counts, though, and RC is one of those few artists who could short circuit straight through to the emotion centres in the brain with ust a few piano notes, or a couple of bars of that inimitable voice.
'The Genius of Soul' is a 1991 US documentary tracing Ray Charles' career using interviews and short music clips. The programme includes new (ie. 1991) and archive comments from Ray, as well as words of praise from musical colleagues such as Quincy Jones, Dr John, Billy Preston and Merry Clayton from his backing vocalists The Raelettes. The wealth of his output is illustrated by excerpts from concerts and TV shows, and there is also footage of some of the artists who inspired him, including Count Basie, Louis Jordan, Muddy Waters and Charles Brown.
The documentary is a good introduction to Ray, the man and his music, for those not familiar with him, and an informative profile for his many fans.
