Herbert West (Jeffery Combs) has found the secret to eternal life--or so he thinks. West needs fresh cadavers to continue his experiments in the re-animation of dead tissue, so he enlists the help of young medical student Dan Cain (Bruce Abbott) to steal bodies from the local morgue. Despite all the warning signs of failure, the eccentric West's research continues. The results are crazed zombies that roam the streets, severed heads that talk, murder, madness, and chaos, all in the name of science, of course. Director Stuart Gordon's film debut, an adaptation of the short story by H.P. Lovecraft, is a masterpiece of ghoulish fun. Graphic special effects, good scripting, and perfectly over-the-top performances make RE-ANIMATOR a classic horror film in the tradition of THE EVIL DEAD and RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD.

This was one of the best horror films of the 1980s.
From the opening titles, which use an update of the theme from Psycho, this is played absolutely straight, which is what makes it also one of the funniest horror films since the Dr Phibes duo.
Herbert West - a wonderful performance from Jeffrey Combs - has discovered a means of re-animating the dead. But his work does attract envy from his professor. And it does have its... side-effects.
This was writer and director Stuart Gordon's first film. You really don't want to see the others. If you've a somewhat twisted sense of humour, you really do want to see this.
I first saw this movie when it came out. I wasn't sure what to expect and what I found was an exhilerating voyage into loonsville. Loosely based on a Lovecraftian tale, Medical Student Herbert West (Jeffery Combs) develops a luminous green reagent that brings the dead back to life with disasterous consequenses. This film is undoubtedly low budget but is laced with fantastic jokes and dollops of gore. Over the top? I think so. Highly watchable? Definately. You will feel like you're right back in the eighties watching this film. Bring popcorn and sickbags.
With Saw V and Midnight Meat Train both currently thrilling cinema goers across the country, we started reminiscing about the best horror movie taglines ever. A tagline, as you probably know, is the one-liner that appears on an ad, a poster or a commercial that sums up the appeal of a movie. Once upon a time yours truly was involved in a film society and we dabbled in this art ourselves. I recall coming up with a tagline for James Whale’s black and white classic Bride of Frankenstein ( Read more
