lip reading
By Craig R. from Luton,England , 06 May 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
Another good french film...is it something in the water over there?
The film, a delectable thriller/romance stars Emmanuele Devos as 'Carla' -a senior secretary for a property development company who unbeknown to her employees and colleagues is deaf and has the ability to lip read, hence the title. Expoited and overlooked by her male bosses and her friends, she has the chance to employ an assistant. She chooses 'Paul' played by Vincent Cassel, an ex-con fresh from prison. The two bond and soon his criminal abilties and her lip reading skills create an opportunity that lead to a darker world.
The film is full of subtle imagery and sound while the two characters are realistic and fully formed. No doubt that this will be remade by Hollywood - so go watch this now and revel in this gallic flick before some big studio gloss over the nuances of a wonderful film.- Was this review helpful to you?

(81)More than Read my Lips
By a customer , 24 Mar 2013Creative unique storyline, gripping, psychologically sound, attentions to details (mostly). Vincent Cassel's performance is brilliant - just watch how his image and confidence change... It has most of the reasons why i like french film - life is an art! You can't take it too seriously, just enjoy... not to be missed.- Was this review helpful to you?

Never a dull moment watching Cassel
By a customer , 25 Jan 2013Vincent Cassel - if you love this guy you'll love this film. A brilliant performance in a weirdly romantic thriller. Of course there are subtitles - it's a French film!- Was this review helpful to you?

Not that good
By Placeyplacey (5 reviews) from Preston , 16 Dec 2012Only just OK. I think it was a bit daft and not very engaging. Some parts of the plot were just wrong - could he really live in the office cupboard and nobody notice?- Was this review helpful to you?

So much more than your typical romantic thriller
By a customer , 20 Nov 2012I highly recommend this film. The acting is mesmeric and the storyline hooked me in so that after I had finished watching it I had to watch it all over again. The two lead characters are both flawed and outcasts in their own way, but as the story progresses they discover and although initially reluctant acknowledge that together they can compensate for each other's failings. This film is so much more than your typical romantic thriller.
(If you can't see the sub-titles turn them on in the settings).- Was this review helpful to you?

The worm turns
By insomniac (88 reviews) from Malvern , 03 Jan 2012This is a brilliant film which keeps you on the edge of your seat until the end. It is the story of a young deaf woman who is overlooked and ignored by everybody around her but who observes and understands everything as she can lipread. She strikes up an unlikely relationship with an ex-criminal who gradually develops respect for her. Unmissable!- Was this review helpful to you?
