If My Big Fat Greek Wedding was the fairytale corner of the ethnic romantic comedy market, then Real Women Have Curves is the realistic version. Ana is young, curvy in all the places it is 'unacceptable' to have curves, and faced with the problem of winning over her parents to the idea of going to college. It's more of a coming-of-age movie, but along the way it has a lot to say about families, personal responsibility, and freedoms. It's funny, uplifting, and while it can be a little cliched (Ana's mother is much like the grandmother from Raising Victor Vargas) it will leave you with a big smile on your face.

A word of warning, though: in parts of this film the characters speak their native language (Mexican), and there are no subtitles - they're just not available. It happens mostly in the first half hour. You can still work out the meaning of what's being said - the quality of the acting is very good - but any subtleties are lost. It's a shame, as it might put some viewers off from watching the whole film.
