Ben Stiller made his feature directing debut with Reality Bites, a fresh, irreverant romantic comedy about life and love for post-Baby-Boomers. It's graduation day, 1994, and Lelaina Pierce is taking her first, bold step into the final frontier - reality. Unfortunately, her future seems to have moved away without leaving a forwarding address. Wynona Ryder and Ethan Hawke star with Janeane Garofalo and Steve Zahn as a circle of friends, who, facing some hard facts about life and love after college, are mapping out their own offbeat survival guide for the 1990s.

Ben Stiller made his directorial debut with this Generation X comedy, which, though likeable enough, isn't particularly realistic. Strip away the attitude and all you'll find is an old-fashioned romantic comedy, in which Winona Ryder can't make up her mind between geek Stiller and tuned-in drop-out Ethan Hawke. This wouldn't be so bad if the characters were interesting, but, with the exception of Janeane Garofalo, they're self-obsessed 20-somethings with little grasp of the big bad world. Yet, for all its faults, this still has moments of hip charm.
Up-to-the-minute details of life among the recently 20, but so timely in its references it already seems old-fashioned; its love story is very familiar, though it may seem new to the recently adult.
This is my favourite film of all time with an equally wicked old school indie soundtrack.
Its one of those super hip films which doesnt take itself to seriously and looks very cool but not hugely stylised.
Janeane Garofalo is fantastic as Vicki and Winona is as lovable as ever.To me Ethan Hawkes character does ruin it and is what i dislike about it the most.
The ending is prtty predictable but very good all the same. The highlight for me was the gas station part at the start which involved the track My Sherona by the knack.
Ben Stiller got off to a really good start to his directing career with this with a strong script, cast and music it really is a generation x 90s classic and ignore the people who say its overated its anything but.A really good fun comedy thats not got the run of the mill relationship saga like alot of them.Highly recommended!!!
This has to be one of those classic movies of the 90's most everyone has seen it or at lest heard of it. The story is easy to follow and the actors now well known, but this is where a few got their start. If you are a fan of Winona then you have got to see this film
