Everything about this version of Du Maurier's story is the best yet.
The casting is brilliant. Charles Dance is remote, almost untouchable with an air of tragedy that Olivier never manages. Emelia Fox has the childlike trust and innocence that the character demands and Diana Rigg as Mrs Danvers is harsh and bitter without being manic.
The supporting roles are also superb and are far more coherent than other versions.
Topped off with a brilliant filmscore and marvelous locations make this the first choice for anyone who loves this story.
