LOVEFiLM Review Rec

  • 3.5 stars out of 5

    By Tom Charity from LOVEFiLM

There's something about zombies that has caught moviegoers' imagination in the last years - something to do with the fear of viral epidemics and social breakdown, probably.

    [Highly rated reviewer]

My expectations were extremely high for this film and it didnt disappoint!!

I loved the Blair Witch and after sitting through Cloverfield i feared nothing would ever come close but...

This film has it all - scares, shocks, uneasy laughter and a cracker of an ending.

It starts off slow, building up the usual characters, setting etc then erupts into a claustrophobic hell-fest. The zombies are slightly less energetic than the ones in the 'Dawn' remake and '28 days/weeks later', but definately got more bite than the Romero ones. Whether thats a bad thing you be the judge but either way its not going to effect a great film! I wouldn't say that there is really anything new here, its just been refined into a superb film.

The lead women is gorgeous which always helps (for me)! The rest of the characters are great and offer good little sub-plots. The explanation of the 'zombies' is a great idea and deserves 5stars just for that. Why the 4star review? Well i couldnt give 4.5 and the film isn't perfect with the POV camera shots sometimes too convenient/staged to be taken seriously. Also although the ending was great i feel that (without spoiling it) the protagonists could've maybe done a bit of the old ultra-violence rather than trying to sneak out! (you'll know what i mean when you see it)

Where Blair Witch used suggestion to scare this film uses a sledgehammer handle to the face, however the film is just as effective!

Dont be put off with the subtitles see this film now!

  • An epic zombie/virus film

    Rated - 4.5 stars

For me, this film deserves more credit that the 3. 5 stars average at the point of me writing this review. I am a big zombie/rage virus etc fan. Personally, this film sits with the greats such as 28 days later. If you are looking for a large budget zombie film with a lot of graphical enhancement then this is not your sort of film. It does not cover the whole world but focuses on a block of appartments in which some form of virus/infection/possession??? has somehow manifested. I love the realistic stance the film takes, involving everyday people who have been put in a situation that they are desperate to escape. If something like this ever were going to happen i'm sure the government would respond in exactly the same way. A 'just war' comes to mind. It genuinely is a nail biting horror-fest that deserves commendation for its excellent scripting and acting, mood setting, and fear inducing jumps. Although I'm sure it has been criticised for its ending this left the story open for another impressive film. BE WARNED: stop after you have watched REC2. I don't know what happened but REC3 has spoilt a truely epic story.

  • NOT SCARY

What is it about zombies that makes them not in the least bit scary? Is it that they're too obviously unreal? Only noticed this supposedly scary film had zombies in once I'd clicked to rent, but having read other reviews, comparing with Blair Witch by virtue of hand held camera filming style, and seen some of the paper reviews, I thought I'd give it a go. Premise is good enough, particuarly if zombies DO do it for you terror wise, but there are too few heart stopping bits and surprises ( I counted one); some of the bits that are intended as such can be seen coming a mile off. Coupled with the fact that the T. V. reporter is highly irritating, give it a miss if you want to be scared.

Absolutely pooed myself watching this - atmospheric and 'real' with plenty of moments to take you off your seat. Had to put the light on half way through...

Blair Witch set the scene for a new way of making films but lets be honest with all the hype it was poop. It spawned some sequels which were also poop, trust me I am not one who wants to watch jumpy film action on a big screen. So I was recommended this by a friend nad have to say thank god it wasn't long! The main character Angela is so annoying with her shouting screaming especially at 100 miles an hour spanish. I'm surpised the camera man didn't hit her with it awrgh. So its no from me as it was disappointing and the story line bitty for example how did the last policeman get attacked. I would like to see the american version as it may not be as bad. Don't rent this its not worth it
