  • good, if a bit overlong

    [Highly rated reviewer]

This is obviously striving to be the 'All the Presidents Men' of the 00's and while it doesnt match up to that (the event itself isnt as dramatic so the film aint gonna be) it's a pretty decent, if somewhat low key, account of the election, it has a firm Democrats = Good, Republicans = BAD philosophy.

The acting is mainly solid, if unspectacular, throughout - although Laura Dern runs VERY close to spoiling things with a spectacularly over the top performance as Katherine Harris and Tom Wilkinson, as James Baker, sports a non to convincing accent and an even less convincing hair style (ditto John Hurt as Warren Christopher).

Spacey is his usual self and gets good support from the likes of Bob Balaban, Ed Begley Jr and Dennis Leary.

The whole enterprise has a bit of a 'made for TV' feel about it and maybe gets a little stretched towards the end but still an enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours.

  • When Pining for West Wing...

    Rated - 5.0 stars

... watch this. We absolutely loved it, having never heard of it previously - which is a real shame. A stellar cast, a clear exposition of what actually happened in those crazy weeks after the first Florida count and a sufficiently dramatic conflict between the two opposing Campaign teams and inevitably shameless lawyers to keep it fascinating. Pitch perfect performances from everyone. Admittedly won't be everyone's cup of tea, but if you were a West Wing fan, or if you're just generally interested in understanding more about one of the many and varied travesties of so-called US democracy and justice, you'll enjoy it. In our view, it deserves to be better known....

  • Recant those dumb reviews

I'm shocked and staggered by the negative reviews for this film. One of the reviewers said, 'it lacked... reason for existing.'

This is the story of the greatest political outrage of modern times. If the Republicans hadn't rigged the vote Bush wouldn't have got elected, 9/11 may never have happened (if it had, it wouldn't have automatically lead to unwinnable wars in Iraq & Afghanistan) and there probably wouldn't have been the massive global depression that we are about to encounter.

George Santayana said, 'Those who don't learn from history are dooomed to repeat it'. And that's why this film should be essential viewing for anybody that has enough brain cells to believe in the sanctity of the democratic process.

Tedious, tedious, tedious. You don't have to be American and interested in politics to get anywhere remotely near enjoying this film, but it will certainly help. For this UK viewer there was far too much specific detail and not enough tension and drama. Fundamentally it's a movie about an election recount. End of.

  • For lovers of historyy or politics

I did enjoy this film. I had some understanding of the events and arguments surrounding the problematic Florida count which gave George W Bush the votes he needed to win the 2000 election, and the film added to my knowledge.

I would describe it as a solid rather than exceptional piece of work, with a desire to convey the facts and the nature of what was at stake.

As we all now know, the election of George W proved to be of significance to the whole world and this film gives one a very good idea of how close things were to our history being very different.

As to whether democracy won in 2000, watch and make up your own mind.

This was an appalling film, it lacked any excitement or reason for existing. Even though I often hate documentaries, I would have prefered to sit through a half hour documentary on what the issues were and how the US will move on. I never want to see this film again!
