  • Not bad - but expect better from Rock star

    [Highly rated reviewer]

This is a very good attempt at a western game, there is the typical story line you'd expect from a rockstar game but i thought this game was lacking in something. The gameplay also did not seem as fluid as many of their other titles.

This was the first of a few western games released but i prefer the later title GUN

  • Not what you'd expect from Rockstar...

Red Dead Revolver has a strong, unique basis that was obviously influential for the incredible Red Dead Redemption.

However, it is clear that this game was not a Rockstar creation. While Rockstar published the game, it was originally a Capcom production, and you can clearly see this difference when comparing it with other Rockstar games of the time.

The graphics were pretty poor, even considering the time, and as a result the characters tended to blend into the background, making it very difficult to stay interested for a long period of time.

As far as third person shooters go, I found it quite repetitive - there weren't any real demands to change strategy: throughout it was just finding cover or strafing around while shooting, followed by a cutscene, followed by shooting again, etc.

It seems that Rockstar did attempt to make the story more interesting through the cutscenes, and the storyline, which is echoed in Red Dead Redemption, was good, although I would have preferred it if it was more developed. There were also little quirks that I quite liked such as exploring the town of Brimstone and unlocking journal entries that added more depth to the characters. There were also other unlockables like showdowns, but I did not have the chance to explore them.

Overall it is a sound game, with a solid framework and a good Western feel, and I would reccommend that die hard Red Dead Redemption fans have a look, although you may find it more useful just watching a video summarising the story. However, if you're looking for a Rockstar style sandbox game, you will be disappointed.

  • A Piece of the Old West

There's a strong Sergio Leone spaghetti western influence running right through this game, and that's no bad thing. Rockstar, probably best known for Grand Theft Auto, have taken their experience with sandbox games and applied it to the old west. Being a PS2 game the scope and graphics are somewhat limited compared to today's consoles. but there's still plenty of fun to be had here.

You get to play a few different characters but the main hero of our story is Red, a bounty hunter out to avenge the death of his parents. There's a hint of Clint Eastwood in the performance of Red but he lacks a lot of Eastwood's macho charisma. The opening mission gives you a chance to handle the controls and sets up the story with the destruction of Red's happy home. It's enough to make any young lad a bit moody really.Red's got a penchant for guns and gets to shoot revolvers (one in each hand if that's your style), rifles and shotguns, as well as throwing dynamite and other incendiaries.

The game play is set over a number of missions in various settings including a train, an old western town and a mine. The bad guys tend towards the caricature in some cases but the bigger bosses are more realistic. You need to make use of cover and be able to run while shooting but the game helps with sight locking so that's not too difficult.

Cut scenes stitch the story together neatly and are presented like pieces of old film, complete with scratches. It all adds nicely to the atmosphere.

The release of Red Dead Redemption will undoubtedly overshadow this first release in the series. If you're waiting for that title to be sent to you and can't wait to get your hands on a six-shooter, give Red Dead Revolver a spin.

I started playing this and thought 'this is o.k., but not that great!' I then found myself playing it all the way to the end.

I rarely finish games unless they really grip me, but this one's different.

It ain't exactly brilliant, but I kept coming back for more...

At times it's quite hard, but most of the time it's o.k. and I found it quite fun; especially with a few mates round, watching and taking the 'you-know-what' out of me whenever I got blown away!!!
