In this remake of Michael Mann's revered Manhunter (the first version of Thomas Harris's novel Red Dragon filmed in 1986), which starred Brian Cox as Dr Lecter before Anthony Hopkins took over the role, ex-FBI agent Will Graham (Edward Norton) investigates a series of killings committed by Francis Dolarhyde (a tattooed Ralph Fiennes), known only as “The Tooth Fairy”. To get inside the killer's head, Graham has to consult his arch-nemesis — and the man he put behind bars — Dr Lecter. Closer to The Silence of the Lambs than Hannibal in tone and tension, this is a classier, less campy outing for the gourmet doctor, who is well matched in the psycho stakes by Fiennes's dentally challenged killer. With this prequel/remake, the people behind the film series seem to have taken to the idea of cannibalism a bit too literally. A crass idea, maybe, but despite a more literal interpretation of the book than Mann's version, it's done with class by director Brett Ratner and The Silence of the Lambs screenwriter Ted Tally.

A remake that didn't need to be made, other than as a source of profit and to allow Hopkins to perform his gustatory routine as Hannibal Lecter; it's slickly done, but might have been better left undone.

    Hopkins is unmissable as ever

Yes, it's very different from Silence of the Lambs - the peerless psycho drama about a serial killer.

But actually this film has every bit as creepy a villain as Silence (Ralph Fiennes), and the who-dunnit-ness is fascinating.

Hopkins as ever is brilliant and if you like him, or you thrillers, or you like Silence of the Lambs, you won't be disappointed.

    Watch the Original

A dreadful attempt at remaking Manhunter.

Almost every scene is copied, with an attempt to make it more sinister by darkness and Anthony Hopkins overacting.

    The film fails completely.

    Edward Norton is completely miss-cast.

    A complete disappointment.

If in doubt view the original.

    reconsider

please reconsider if you liked silence of the lambs. After the follow on 'hanibal' it all went pear shaped to me...special agent starling wasnt jodie foster, beter to have a new agent than the same one with a different actress if u ask me. Red dragon goes back to the begining..in more ways than one if u ask me .You get the same atmosphere as u did in the first of this trilogy if not better. Just shows us brits have some of the best actors in the world.. namely mr hopkins , but this time in the prequal no jodie sob sob...but this is right back in the vien of the original if not better. if you loved silence of the lambs..youll love this. treat yourself ..rent it

    Outstanding with a superb ending

This is a great movie, much better than Hannibal (even though I liked that too). Norton is excellent and Hopkins is classic Hannibal. I enjoyed this very much and the ending took my breath away.

    Great.

    Instantly forgettable

It's not that it's a bad film, there's just nothing really good about it. Hopkins camps it up and is more comical than sinister and the film gives the other characters nothing for the actors to shine with. SOTL is great, Hannibal is pretty dire and this film you have to see to complete the trilogy but I wouldn't go buying a boxset anytime soon, just get the first one, it's the only one worth repeated viewings. Manhunt on the other hand is well worth a look...

    Hairlip horror!

After being so dissappointed with 'Hannibal',i wondered what else could go wrong in this prequel to the classic SILENCE.

Firstly i must admit it was a lot better than Hannibal and i was glued to my seat for the final 40 minutes.Hopkins starts off as if he had never been away from the set of silence of the lambs but then,as the film progresses he overemphasises an alabama accent and just seems to be trying to hard to better his performance.

The usually astounding Harvey Kietel is in what seems to be a miscast or uncomfortable role and Fiennes is ,well, pretty forgettable if not for the tattoo.

What does stand out though is another great performance from ED norton. He carries the role with dignity and outshines the whole cast with ease.

there are some nice character placements from the first movie and a great continuity jab at the end but overall i would call this an average film.

    Enough to silence fans...

This was great. A well-crafted prequel to Silence of the Lambs and Hanibal. Not quite as special as the former, but better than the latter.

This is the second time that the novel Red Dragon has been filmed. The first version was called Manhunter and had the guy from CSI in the lead role as agent Graham. It was a low budget affair though and not as good.

If you like Silence of the Lambs you'll love this.

    Manhunter v Red Dragon

Anthony Hopkins gives a, usual, sparkling performance as Hannibal Lechter, however, I felt the film deviated unnecessarily at the end to add drama where none was needed. Still prefer the original 'Manhunter' - much more suspense than in this version which was, quite obviously, another Hollywood money making scheme.
