    [Highly rated reviewer]

One of my favourite films of all time, I am amazed it has taken so long to come out on DVD.

Such a wealth of British acting talent on display, Colin Blakely was magnificent as Stalin, and David Suchet as Beria, 'Do what you like with me, I do not know' became a catch phrase for a whole group of us who saw this film back in the 80's. We still use 'Why is the sky blue and what are lesbians for'.

The attention to detail in what is a black comedy has always amazed me, not many people would know what Stalin's son looked like but the actor used in the film is the spitting image of him.

Stalin used to love the members of the Politburo to call him 'Boss' and you get this in the film with the scenes involving Beria.

The dark side of the film is also there though, one mistake and it's a trip to the Lubyanka and a bullet in the back of the head.

I loved the way that regional British accents were used to tell the difference between Russians and Georgians rather than have them put on a fake 'Russian' one.

The film is light hearted, comic in many places but instantly changes to show the dark side of Stalin's empire. It shows how even Stalin's own family was not immune to his paranoia, having Beria investigate his daughters boyfriends or sending his son to ten days detention for saying the wrong thing about 'bumping people off', priceless.

A thoroughly enjoyable film which I have recommended to many of my friends, who all love it.
