In the future, pollution and overpopulation are making the Earth uninhabitable. Humanity's only hope is to colonize the planet Mars by using algae to produce oxygen, but when the algae mysteriously disappear, a group of astronauts are sent to Mars on a mission to learn why. The spaceship, led by Commander Kate Bowman (Carrie-Anne Moss), is preparing to land when a sudden emergency forces her to crash-land on the planet without supplies or equipment. The survivors, including systems engineer Gallagher (Val Kilmer) and scientists Burchenal (Tom Sizemore) and Pettengil (Simon Baker), have to figure out how to return to their ship while also learning the truth about the missing algae. As if things weren't bad enough, they have to avoid AMEE, the ship's malfunctioning robot who is trying to kill them all.
RED PLANET is an exciting science fiction thriller based on scientific facts, including theoretical notions on how to "terraform" Mars to become inhabitable. The film also provides information about the nuts and bolts of basic space travel. Kilmer and company avoid science fiction cliches to make their Martian adventures more believable, creating a saga of survival under incredible conditions.

The second of 2000's Mars-based science-fiction adventures makes Brian De Palma's under-rated Mission to Mars look like 2001: a Space Odyssey. It's 2050, and a team that includes Val Kilmer, Tom Sizemore, Carrie-Anne Moss and a hammier-than-ever Terence Stamp is sent to investigate when long-range efforts to make Mars habitable run into problems. Vital equipment is damaged in a crash-landing and the survivors are forced to depend on one another to fend off man-eating alien bugs and their own malfunctioning exploration robot while surviving the inhospitable terrain. Director Antony Hoffman's feel-bad fantasy can't be faulted technically: it looks great, and features some nifty space gadgets and nice special effects. But the plot lacks dramatic drive and the supposedly realistic depiction of interplanetary travel is markedly unengaging. The spectres of other, far better, sci-fi epics haunt the whole misbegotten patchwork: Alien, Starship Troopers, Short Circuit — you name it, it's in here somewhere. Aside from the ever-cool Sizemore, none of the actors registers as anything more than easily expendable ciphers, and the whole damp squib ensures Mars won't be a Hollywood travel destination for many moons to come.
"...Arresting cinematography....The film is technically adroit. The spaceship and Martian surface have the true grit one imagines space travel a half-century from now might be like..."
great film, keeped me watching all the way through,
a film for any sci fi fanatic, one to watch
Long slow start introducing the crew of the spaceship, then they get to Mars and it all starts happening.
All rather predictable stuff which doesn't manage to create enough excitement to make up for the shallow characters. The character of the female Commander is explored to some extent (cringing shower scene), but the rest of the crew are interchangeable.
Still, I did make it through to the end, so if you're a sci-fi addict and you've done all the others, it's better than an evening of soaps and makeovers.
