The REAR WINDOW-style atmosphere... tension... has the feel of a Michael Haneke film
A tour-de-force.The best British film since Trainspotting-if you enjoy meat for the mind- if you want enjoyable no-brainer fare, watch Hot Fuzz. Grief, redemption and learning to move on are central themes in this slow- building, intriguing thriller set in an outwardly bleak Glasgow but with a Renoir-like humanity ultimately shown by brilliant debut director Andrea Arnold. Many times you think a character might be unsympathetic or evil only to be shown otherwise. Would make a good double-bill with Haneke's Hidden, what with the CCTV's ambiguous gaze at its heart. She doesn't say much as Jackie,(the central character),so Kate Dickie' s poignant, tortured, sad face carrys the spare plot along.A remarkable performance.
A real gem of a film. Admitedly this is not for fans of Hollywood Formula films and it clearly doesn't have enough explosions, car chases and big name stars for some viewers. If you like your movies to be predictable and conventional - then this is not for you. However if you are a fan of original, thought provoking filmaking and don't need to be continously bombarded with expensive sfx for every second to maintain interest, then this is highly recommended.
Director Arnold manages to keep the viewer engaged throughout with a story that hooks you early on and proceeds to keep you wanting to know more. Very often the answer to one question, raises several more. A wonderful tale of blame, guilt, loss and letting go ensues. Arnold manages to make you sympathetic towards all of the main protagonists - even though you probably don't want to be!
Yes it's bleak and the ill advised schemes of Glasgow provide a harrowing backdrop for the movie, but it is storytelling based on real life. People actually live in estates like this and their stories deserve to be told too.
All in all, an excellent piece of work, and one that bodes well for Andrea Arnolds career.
