Brigitte Nielsen (the ex-Mrs Sylvester Stallone) stars here in the biggest role of her career to date as Red Sonja — a leather-bikini-clad warrior who aims to avenge the death of her family by confronting wicked queen Sandahl Bergman. But it is Arnold Schwarzenegger who is the real star here, showing off his bulging biceps and trying to retain his dignity in a loincloth as the grunting hero who helps her. Based on a story by Robert E Howard (who also wrote the Conan tales), this is a sword-and-sorcery adventure for those who like their action fast and furious, their dialogue ropy and their acting filled with more ham than a butcher's shop.

    Delightfully ropey!

This is badly acted, hilariously casted, and just brilliant! I love this movie.

    Really not bad

I don't think anyone ever likes admitting they enjoyed a movie with Brigitte Nielsen- nor do they enjoy admitting they like a 'hokey' comic book movie. But hey, this really is a pretty fun flick, and this is one of the few roles that seem meant for Brigitte.

Red Sonja properly belongs in the Conan series. Sonja herself is a character first introduced in the Conan story series. It seems quite a coup to have gotten Arnold himself for the film, even though with licensing rights tied up they couldn't *say* 'Conan'. Everyone knows who it's supposed to be.

As to Arnie's top billing- it makes sense when you realize that when this movie came out, Arnold was very well known and loved as Conan. The producers had to do everything possible to attract the Conan-fan who isn't aware of who Red Sonja is... so hype Arnie's name, and you get bigger box office. Simple, really.

Don't watch the movie expecting anything more than an adventure film, though!

    Indescribable.

I love this. One of my favourites.Arnie is just great-classic Arnie.Brigitte Neilsen raises wooden acting to an art form and the plot rumbles along in steady fantasy /sci fi form. You need to see it with like minded friends and a few drinks.Enjoyably awful.Wonderful to hoot and heckle.Try Raquel Welch in Fantastic Voyage as a similar and watch her get blown about in the lungs.Har har!

    wicked and wonderful

i have always liked this movie , even though the acting is not great there is plenty to enjoy if you are into this sort of thing . Brigitte Neilson looking fine in her only decent movie and Big Arnie getting ready for his Conan role . Some great comedy moments and decent effects and action , all in all not as bad as many make out it to be ..

    Cheese on a blade

This is one of those films that you love simply because its easy to watch and as a kid in the 80's its escapism at its best.

I'd like to clear something up here though. Arnie signed on for three conan movies in the early eighties with John Milius directing the first one to critical acclaim and Richard Fleischer directing the second to... well... less than critical acclaim. Arnie's popularity was really taking off and he wanted to explore other projects. He was also a little disillusioned with Fleisher's directional skills so to appease the studio agreed to take a smaller part in Red Sonja instead. Unfortunately for the critics this was also directed by Richard Fleischer!

Its special effects suck ass big time - particularly the giant spider in Queen Gedren's chambers although there is a major comedy moment when her sorceror conjures up some soft porn on his magic mirror!

Its worth a watch if you like Arnie, but Conan it aint.

    Swords and loin cloths

Great movie for the time. Arnold and Bridgit play excellent roles in this amusing adventure. This was really the fore runner to the Conan movies and well worth a watch if that is your cup of tea.

    Overacted, Underdressed and pathetic

This film has nothing to lift it from the mud, nubile young women, beefy men and a very thin and poorly acted story make it less than worthwhile
