Awe-inspiring
By a customer from Brighton , 31 Jan 2008[Highly rated reviewer]
'Reds' seems to have dropped off of the general movie radar these days. Few, if any of my friends have even heard of it let alone seen it.
I'd heard good things about it, so gave it a try...
This film is an unqualified masterpiece - truly of the kind that they no longer seem to make...
A beautifully and intelligently told story, that takes the very personal elements of a love story and the universal element of political revolution and fuses the two into a sublime balance, making the two parts compliment each other and drive each other forward. The intricacies of the political revolutions in Russia etc of the 19-teens and twenties never become too caught up in their own worthiness (or wordiness) to lose sight of the drama and the romance is never allowed to become mawkish.
This film can be likened to acknowledged classics such as 'The Godfather' and 'Once Upon A Time In America', not in subject matter perhaps, but in scope, depth and the richness of detail with which it is told.
The performances are stellar all-round, but Keaton and Beatty do an unbelievable job, and what with Beatty writing the screenplay (based on real events, of course, but he's brought real poetry to a complex true story) and directing, I have renewed respect for his abilities...! (that sounds facetious, but is supposed to sound respectful!)
It should also be noted that this film looks fantastic! Vittorio Storaro creates some of his best work...The telling of the huge story never feels forced or rushed...The camera drinking in beautiful, snowy Russian vistas as well as close, intense coffee-shop and kitchen debate without a hint of self-consciousness...
Yes, this film takes time, but allow it time and it sweeps you up in its glorious world and makes other 'epics' like 'Schindler's List' seem extremely arch and simplistic by comparison.
If you've got the patience, this film will reward you in spades...- Was this review helpful to you?

(12)LAND OF THE FREE ?
By Burnhamite (379 reviews) from BURNHAM , 24 Mar 2011This most impressive movie clearly illustrates how those, throughout the years have been ostracized for daring to voice their opinions.America has always claimed to be the land of the free, there should be an addendum, those who toe the line. This movie should be a must in every household in the free world.- Was this review helpful to you?

Truly Inspiring
By Jules6 (1 review) from London , 02 Sep 2010I watched this film for the first time about a week ago and I loved it! Warren Beatty and Diane Keaton are fantastic actors. Warren Beatty was very brave to create a film as controversial as this. The love story was heartfelt and very moving, it had tears several times. I really admired the main character Jack Reed, how he followed his passions and fought for a cause he believed in...I think many people could learn from him. The ending left me in tears! However, I really was truly inspired by this film and thought about it for days after....Id recommend it to everyone!- Was this review helpful to you?

Reds for Insomniacs
By Jerryatrick (5 reviews) from Morpeth , 15 Apr 2009Time has not been kind to the Russian Revolution or this film. Overlong and overblown. Once Warren Beatty has used all the facial expressions he can muster (I made it one) then he becomes a visual irritant. His feisty partner is not given the space she deserves: her epic journey to rescue him is a series of crudely stitched together shots.- Was this review helpful to you?

Up close and political
By markhop (3 reviews) from Broadstairs , 28 Jan 2009What a load of awesome. This is a great film and does a good job of what is a very ambitious task: intertwining a complex romantic relationship with the Russian Revolution of 1917. It probably does overtstretch itself especially in the second half but it has great central performances and a beautiful ending. One of the best things about this film is how it captures the complexities and contradictions of being a revolutionary. Warren Beatty's and Karen Keating's character's radicalism are neither idealised nor ridiculed. I love the way the film is intercut with interviews with people who actually involved in the events that the film portrays. These days its hard to imagine that very ordinary people could freely talk about the power of revolution as something they seriously desired and believed in. As an introduction to the history of the event, its pretty thin but it is really good at showing you what this revolution meant to many American who truly wanted a better world. Their passion is something we might learn from in what have been apathetic times - maybe not so apathetic now Obama has landed and world economy is screwed. Let's get political.
I think my friends' Dad was an extra too, another reason to watch.- Was this review helpful to you?

Rather long
By a customer from London , 29 Oct 2008Not a bad film, with good performances. More of a focus on the main characters of the Bolshevik revolution may have helped.- Was this review helpful to you?
