François Ozon is one of the most provocative and vibrant filmmakers to emerge during the 1990s. His dark, mordantly psychological films draw their impact from often disturbing explorations of transgression and sexuality and combine wry humour, sensitivity and subversive insight with a talent for manipulation. This eclectic collection of seven shorts captures the talent Ozon would continue to display in his later feature films.

If you like Francois Ozon, especially his earlier films like 'Criminal Lovers' or 'Sitcom', then you will probably like this collection of shorts. It shows his darker beginnings, before he moved on to make more kitsch (but still good) films like 'Eight Women' or 'Angel'.
Not that all the films in this collection are dark, 'Curtain Raiser', 'Summer Dress' and 'X 2000' are quite benign, but the title film 'Regarde le mer' is more like a horror film. You know almost from the start that something will go wrong, you just can't be sure what, but the end is still shocking nevertheless.
In the end it's quite an eclectic selection, perhaps it would have been better to have made a collection that followed a particular theme, hence 4 stars not 5.
Very clever set of short films. Examining idea of youth and experience I suppose, from within and without.
