Regarding Henry

Henry Turner (Harrison Ford), a wealthy, high-powered, highly successful Manhattan lawyer, seems to have everything -- a perfect wife (Annette Bening), a perfect daughter, a perfect life. In fact, Henry is completely cold, rigid and unable to experience love or joy in his day-to- day existence. Everything changes, however, when Henry is gunned down in an act of random violence, and must undergo a slow, difficult recovery. In the process of relearning the most basic skills -- walking, reading, getting dressed in the morning -- Henry discovers something even more important: how to love his family and friends again and how to find true happiness in life.

What looked like a sure-fire winner on paper — ruthless high-flying lawyer Harrison Ford fights back from brain injury and becomes a better person in the process — in fact emerged as a rather cold, lacklustre affair. Ford, who can be unnervingly emotionless on screen, was simply the wrong choice for the role, and director Mike Nichols invests the action with so much gloss and polish you feel as if your brain is swimming in an oil slick. Annette Bening looks lovely and gives one of the film's better performances, but from the start it's hard to sympathise with the family and their plight. A cynical, manipulative exercise that remains compulsively watchable despite its flaws thanks to the star power on board.

    Very moving film

This was a very moving film, brilliantly played by Harrison Ford. The tragic circumstances that befall him are perhaps a sign of the times. It teaches us we should accept our love ones for what they are no matter what life throws at us.

Here's something you may not know about Harrison Ford: in 1968 he was a struggling young actor (youngish - he was 26) when the French director Jacques Demy picked him to star in his first Hollywood movie, Model Shop. Demy was on a roll: his delightful musicals The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and The Young Girls of Rochefort were among the most popular films to emerge from the French new wave, not just in Europe, but in North America too. Ford had done a couple of bit roles in B movies and on TV,... Read more
