Richard Levinson and William Link, those prolific purveyors of TV movies and creators of that old favourite Columbo, are back on the murder trail with this hugely enjoyable drama. The pair put all their knowledge of stage and screen into this whodunnit, in which movie star Lynn Redgrave is bumped off on the night of her Broadway bow. Robert Preston revels in the opportunity to camp it up, although every member of the splendid supporting cast is in dahling mode. Taken at a fair lick by David Greene, this is good old-fashioned entertainment and, for once, the culprit isn't that easy to identify.
This movie has a lot going for it: Director David Greene, writers Richard Levinson & William Link (the creators of COLUMBO), and a wonderful cast. Playright Robert Preston just can't believe his girlfriend Lynn Redgrave commited suicide 12 months earlier because the play he wrote for her flopped. So a year later he assembles the entire cast, the producer, and the director to an empty stage he's hired for the afternoon. He's written a new play called 'Killing Jessica' and he wants them to help him see how it looks with all of them playing parts. They soon realise that they are in fact playing themselves, and this is more than just a rehearsal - it's a hunt for a murderer. Preston believes that one of them killed his girlfriend because it seems that they all had various motives to want her dead. What they don't know is that Preston has arranged for the police officer who investigated his girlfriend's death to watch the proceedings from the darkness of the upper balcony. The drama unfolds wonderfully, with one twist following another until the final, totally unexpected climax...
