Mostly hot air

An apocalyptic world where dragons rule the skies and the humans fight desperately for their survival? If you?re thinking Mad Max vs Aliens, then think again because this ain?t it.
First off, this film has an obviously small budget which, granted, is not always a problem. When you?re attempting to create a world of the future, ravaged and destroyed by fire-breathing monsters, and you?re one main set piece is a burnt-out castle, it IS a problem. Reign of Fire lacks the kind of scale and vision that adequately conveys a sense of worldwide devastation.
And then of course there?s the dragons. Beautifully designed and convincingly animated for sure, but there just aren?t enough of them. In the opening scenes, the narrator describes them as a swarm of locusts but throughout the rest of the film we rarely see more than one of them at any time. If you watch James Cameron?s Aliens closely, you?ll notice a similar trait. The difference, however, is that Cameron directs so ferociously, you come away believing you?ve witnessed a spectacular showdown of man v. beast.
Sadly, Reign of Fire is no Aliens, despite the best efforts of Director Rob ?X-Files? Bowman. He?s competent enough and some of the sequences in this movie are inspired. Two free-fallers, attempting to bait and bag a dragon, hurtle violently towards earth as their prey follows thunderously behind. Unfortunately, the action is scarce and too much time is spent on lengthy set-ups. Furthermore, lead men McConaughey and Bale (both fine actors) spend most of their time sneering and talking through clenched teeth, to the point that they become caricatures of themselves.
Reign of Fire had great potential, but is sadly let down by a patchy script, uninspired acting and an absence of breakneck action.- Was this review helpful to you?

(119)Only one thing worse than a dragon... Americans
By Bassman71 (619 reviews) from Didsbury, England , 10 Oct 2012The future, dragons have taken over the world, band of survivors have fortress in UK countryside, Americans show up, want to kill head dragon, carnage.
Average but quite enjoyable action romp with some dated but effective CGI, gruff voiced shouting from Christian Bale and Matthew McConaughey and comic relief from Gerard Butler.
Some nice set-pieces, action (dragon and helicopter scene is ace) and music but lots of plot holes and Bales gruff C0ckney tends to grate after a while.- Was this review helpful to you?

Good action film for younger public
By a customer , 06 Sep 2011I was expecting something more ambitious, but, still, it was fun watching it. Recommended for younger viewers (has dragons it it). Good action film.- Was this review helpful to you?

Dragons v McConaughey...You KNOW who you want to win!!
By JayLow (122 reviews) , 11 Jun 2011I'm not sure which is more unbelievable: dragons taking over the world, or the fact that Matthew McConaughey has a career.
Actually the basic premise of Reign of Fire is silly, but it isn't bad. I like post-apoloytic films and I like Monster Movies and this combines the genres pretty well. The dragons looked good, the ash covered UK wasn't bad and Christian Bale does his po-faced leader-of-men-against-the-odds thing (his performance in Termnator is identical except for the Sol Campbell accent) and he does it pretty well.
The plot, of course, is soooo full of holes and the dialogue is dreadful (what do they pay these writers for?), I'm not sure why Gerard Butler was in the film at all and British geography lessons weren't high on the prioroties of the writers either...
...and then there's Matthew McConaughey...good old Matthew McConaughey...an actor without any discernable acting ability whatsoever. Like a lifeguard who can't swim. Or a drummer with no arms. Or Keanu Reeves. I particularly enjoyed the bit in London where he spent a good 5 minutes doing a strange cantankerous growl whilst considering how to attack the lead dragon. Which, I'm please to say, gave him what he deserved.
Anyway, despite it all I kind of enjoyed it. And I believe in dragons more than I do Matthew McConaughey.- Was this review helpful to you?

READ THE REVIEWS FIRST
By a customer , 04 Jun 2011I had high hopes for this film - for the record I'm female but just love dragons, action, thrills and spills. I mean, come on, Christian Bale, Gerard Butler AND Matthew McConnaughy in one movie...?!
Unfortunately the plot was pathetic, and there were so many treats missed. I came away feeling totally empty and dissatisfied.
Read the reviews before you watch this one, it wasted 2 hours of my life.- Was this review helpful to you?
