[Highly rated reviewer]'A comedian at the Oscars, The saddest man of all' sang Will Ferrel at this year's Oscars and next year I fear we may once again see an example of this when Adam Sandler fails to get a deserved nomination for Reign Over Me.
Don Cheadle plays Alan, an uptight dentist who doesn't really enjoy his life. His wife is domineering and his work partners treat him with no respect. One day he bumps into his college roommate Charlie (Sandler) whose family were killed on 9/11. Charlie cannot deal with his loss and has lost touch with the world. Alan and Charlie begin to hang out again and slowly help each other with their problems.
This is Sandler back in Punch Drunk Love territory. Whilst PDL relied in some ways on Sandlers penchant for anger, this performance is more reserved. This makes the moments when he does lose it all the more powerful. Cheadle does an admirable job in supporting Sandler and the rest of the cast, including Liv Tyler, Jada Pinkett Smith and Saffron Burrows, all give good performances. But this is the Sandler show.
It is a very good film, not to emotional and with some geniunely funny moments. Plus the soundtrack is one for Springsteen fans, with The River album being an instrinsic part of the plot.
If you are expecting the Adam Sandler of Happy Gilmore you may be disappointed, but if you like good, thought-provoking films then this one is for you.

Love, loss and the state of the human conditionBy a customer from Kent , 20 May 2010
THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS Show review anywayHideIt is very rare for me to take any notice of anything with Adam Sandler in it - I usually deteste his hyperactive goofy brainless characters. But having recently seen Bedtime stories and enjoyed it, when I found this film in a bargain bin at a local supermarket, my curiosity got the better of me.
In this film Sandler plays Charlie, a sad loner who has dropped out of society after losing his family in the 9/11 tradgedy and who is unable to face up to his loss.
Opposite him, Don Cheadle plays Adam, a dentist with a thriving practice, great house, car, wife and kids - the archetypical success story. But all is not well with Adam - he is stable and bored stiff with life.
The story opens with a chance meeting between Charlie and Adam who were roomies during their years at Dental School, Adam sees that Charlies life has totally fallen apart but cannot initially understand why. Charlie on the other hand, realises that he has found someone he knows from his past who is not a threat to the painful memories of his loss because Adam was part of his life before his family were around. Charlie also realises that despite his aparent success, Adam is miserable and needs a friend as much as he does.
As the story unfolds in a tale of life, love, loss, friendship, success and humanity I found myself both laughing and crying at the joys and pains of life experiences that both characters are confronted with.
This film, beautifully directed by Mike Binder, brings out a strong performance by Don Cheadle and in my opinion a career pinnacle performance that should have gained Sandler an oscar nomination.
Reign Over MeBy daviebhoy1967 (26 reviews) from Glasgow , 01 May 2010Adam's part is so different in this film from any other part he has played on screen. The feel of this movie was amazing. Adam Sandler's performance was very inspiring. As he played a very rattled and fragile character, he took his ability to the very edge and really worked the role. His character was really interesting. I love all Adam's films they're always fun to watch.

A moving Sandler!!!!By RAMZ (11 reviews) from Bristol , 31 Mar 2010All actors in this movie were really good, it was quite interesting as to how this movie was put together. It gave the audience a feel and sensitive reflection of the 9/11 tragedy. I would have to say that Sandlers performance was amazing...
