One of the prestige productions that brought dignity to the British film industry, this distinguished film stars Charles Laughton in a remarkably affecting performance, his tendency to ham brought under control by producer/director Alexander Korda, whose brother Vincent provides some particularly well-designed studio sets, quaintly converting Denham's sound stages to Rembrandt van Rijn's Amsterdam. No Rembrandt lighting, but excellent re-creations of the paintings, in particular a self-portrait that actually convinces you that Laughton and the Dutch master are one and the same. A rare screen performance from co-star Gertrude Lawrence reveals why this great lady of the stage wasn't loved by the movie camera.
Austerely comic, gently tragic character piece, superbly staged and photographed, with a great performance at its centre.
It is wonderful to find this old film, in such excellent condition, on DVD. It was made in 1937 with a splendid classical all-English cast and there are some very fine moments of work in it, particularly from Charles Laughton, playing Rembrandt. It is basically a run-through of his life, it doesn't end tragically, and the dialogue is brilliant. It is a very fine piece of work (Korda).
A truly wonderful film who, through past decades, has lost none of its charm and beauty.
A master-class of acting from Charles Laughton which makes the film a true classic.
