Director Penny Marshall crosses Stripes with Dead Poets Society in this misconceived high-concept movie, which nevertheless just about manages to get by on the quality of its cast. Danny DeVito, as the unemployed advertising executive called up to teach English to stroppy army recruits, does his best to counteract the sentimentality that keeps rising to the surface, and he is ably supported by such top-line players as Gregory Hines, Cliff Robertson, Ed Begley Jr and Mark Wahlberg (billed here as Marky Mark). Ultimately, however, the film is just too nice for its own good.
Soft-centred comedy that marches along predictable tracks and has little to do with the realities of teaching or army service; as recruiting propaganda, it no doubt serves a purpose.

Renaissance Man is a likable comedy about believe in yourself and realising that you can achieve anything if you but your mind to it.
Renaiassance Man is a educated comedy and it helps if you know a few Shakespeare's plays before watching, especially Hamlet. If you don't know the play, you may find that the jokes go straight over your head.
But sometimes get the feeling that this film is more of a English leason than a comedy!
The DVD itself is a let down. The only extra is the Trailer. The film is 4:3, no other languages and no subtitles. I don't know what soundtrack it is, but I assume it's stereo. It seems to be a quick and dirty VHS transfer, but the quality of the transfer is quite good.
Not what you would expect from the title. Made a few years ago now it still manages a smile.
Out of work executive ad man DeVito takes job to educate bunch of army super duds to minimum no brainer spec, or else its a brain dead discharge for them.-Hmmm. You almost need the same qualification to watch this! No really,-quite entertaining and the kids get a free English lesson by stealth.
Family movie and surprisingly, quite delightful.
This was a film that i had watched a while ago and foudn funny... not as funny as i remember but still a great film. nice easy afternoon watch

Entirely predictable and a bit dated, this is nevertheless a very pleasant Sunday evening sort of film.

Reasonable storyline - good acting - a couple of real quality moments - only let down by US schmaltz now and again - otherwise well worth the sofa time on this one.
the rap version of hamlet is great...
