    Performance Art

A sci-fi, film noir, shot entirely in stark black and white linier graphics, designed to replicate the style of cult French graphic novels, was never going to ring everyone’s bell.

Filmed using the modern animation technique of motion capture, the gorgeous visuals and breathtaking imagery almost, but don’t quite excuse this film its clichéd plot.

The style is certainly ground braking and interesting enough to make the film a worthwhile watch, as we travel through a bladerunneresque Parisian futurescape, but the lack of anything meaty plot wise leaves one feeling a little short-changed.

Huge on style, empty of any real content only the most avid animation fan will want to see this through to its conclusion.

    This will blow your mind

If your looking for a film with a story so deep you need a long piece of rope to get outta the hole, this won't hit that button. But if your looking for a film with more jaw dropping visuals than a Peter Jackson block buster, look no further. But with a gritty black and white back drop so slick and beautifully put together you won't care about the lack of story.

You must must must see this film.

Visually the best I've seen since Akira... and thats saying something

    SO hard to describe

This movie is entirely made in black and white and drawing. On the other hand the story is about a futuristic police investigation based in 2054 in Paris.

I found the swtory gripping and the film very original. Well worth watching but might not please everybody.

    Customer Review

Saw this in a DVD review magazine and thought it worth a punt on the basis that the Amazon DVD rental scheme tempts me into watching the odd 'risky' choice movie.

Overall, a very good film. I liked the innovative use of solid black and white animation over live action. Some people won't like it for sure, but I enjoyed the atmosphere it lent to the feel of the movie. I also enjoyed the futuristic feel of Paris at a future point in time - yes they over glorify Paris a little in the 'extras' but it is subtle in the film and it creates a 'Bladerunner' sense of what may be to come.

I also thought the plot was engaging - to a point. The characters worked well and the relationship between them was conveyed sufficiently for the black and white medium, which must have been a challenge. However, the reason for the modset 3 star rating is that I didn't feel connected to the 'at risk' female - couldn't really care about her to be fair - which I think is a missing link once the plot unfolds as the movie develops.

So, a good movie, one I'll recommend if you fancy watching something different. Not as good as the excellent Sin City or A Scannner Darkly, but a worthwhile view if you like the sound of an original sci-fi that isn't lasers and spaceships.

    Renaissance

I should read more of the description - I thought as this was set in the future I would love it, being a future fan, but the b&w animated style filming was hard to watch. Gave up.

    OK, but ....

I really wanted to like this film. Adult animation gets a bad rap, and the trailers for Renaissance look pretty stunning, so I really wanted this to be a cool, rewarding experience.

Unfortunately, the dialogue was dull, cliched and laughable and the story predictable. A real let down and a waste of good talent. One of the few rentals that I felt has wasted my time.

    Style not substance

Initially interesting, the high contrast black and white images became a pain to watch - difficult to discern the characters.

The acting and dialogue was a bit amateurish, and we gave up watching half way through.

    Its animated, so what??

I have just read the review of the people who hated this film..... the majority of the people were complaining that it is a 'cartoon'. SO!!!! Its a beautifully rendered piece of work, based on the noir comics its based on and I feel very cleverly accents the noir style story.... it has it a mildy intelligent plot, which if you want to engage some brain power is good....not overly taxing, but not a switch off and watch the pretty colours. True their are no colours, but it is definately pretty.

For the people who claim to be mislead.....I saw this at the cinema, my partner not allowing me ot know what it was until I saw it....granted i was surprised by the medium and style, but I saw it for what it is....a work of art.....a sci-fi thriller beautifully made.....

View this with an open mind and hopefully you will enjoy it as much as I did.....

    Black and White

The graphics in this cartoon film are truly impressive and what makes it. Based on the “graphic novels” (cartoon books to you and me) popular in France, it has stark contrast of black and white, with not many shades of grey. Paris in 2054 is remarkably like 21st Century Los Angeles in Blade Runner (with a bit of Metropolis thrown in) and the film can be visually stunning. Then there’s the story: tough he-men, sexy kick-ass women and conspiracy theories. Everything you would expect in an adventure comic book; black and white, with not many shades of grey. If you are into this sort of stuff, you will love this film. I found the story line hackneyed and ultimately, boring.

    Entertaining but Confusing

Renaissance is basically a high concept science fiction-noir film done in a CGI cartoon style. Think 'Bladerunner' in black and white and CGI. The use of shadow is excellent throughout and it proves to be an entertaining slice of science fiction.

To enjoy this film you will have to be a fan of hard science and also not mind a slightly confusing, slow plot. My partner thought it was great so it must have some merit.

Original/inventive and a joy to watch

This won't be everyones cup of tea but i found it to be one of the best films i've seen in a long time.Great animation and an original story with plenty of plot twists.Nice to see something different instead of the same stuff over and over again.Give it a try you might just be surprised.Great voice overs too from the likes of Daniel Craig, Ian Holm and Jonathan Pryce.Highly Recommended!
