Director Jan Kounen allows technology to get the better of him in this accomplished, but inconsistent adaptation of Jean Moebius Giraud's cult comic books. Mystical special effects take priority as Cajun marshal Mike Blueberry (Vincent Cassel) strives to settle an old score with hissable adventurer Wally Blount (Michael Madsen). Having caused the death of Blueberry's first love, Blount once again crosses paths with the lawman when he seeks hidden treasure in Indian lands. The supporting cast, led by Juliette Lewis, ably captures the spirit of the Old West, but the visuals swamp a slender storyline and divert attention from the potentially fascinating subject of native American shamanism.
Slow-paced, mystic comic-book Western, a solemn and somnabulistic mix of Sergio Leone and Carlos Castenada on Valium; it offers a morose hero, a moroser villain, Eddie Izzard as an unconvincing Prussian, and some interminable psychedelia to make up for i
In years to come this film will rightly be recognised as the brilliant masterpiece that it is.
This isnt just another cowboy film. This is an exploration of conciousness and reality and so much more.
Every scene is beautifully shot, and the music alone is worth the rental price.
This film defies classification. I had to get my copy imported from the U.S. Why this film hasnt had a uk release yet just doesnt make sense. Do yourself a favour and get hold of this film anyway you can.
Jan Kounen you are a genius!
I got my hands on a copy yesterday and have already watched it three times...
This is beyond a simple action movie. It's a spiritual journey.
Seriously deep and powerful it clearly shows a man confronting his demons and deepest fears with the help of ancient shamanic wisdom. You rarely see that happen on a big screen.
And some people wonder why it didn't make it to the big screen in the UK....it make give people a glimpse of the truth...and we don't want that here do we?? ;-)
