Hard-hitting boxing drama
By Mike from Leamington Spa , 12 Nov 2006[Highly rated reviewer]
Atmospheric b&w drama that hooks you from the first sequence shot from the viewpoint of a boxer on the end of Cassius Clay's (as he was then) lightning fists.
A little overcooked with the not-very-original story of the weasily manager under threat from the mob unless his faded boxer delivers a performance that compromises him professionally and destroys what is left of his self-respect.
However, the moody photography is a delight and the cast is superb, with Anthony Quinn giving the performance of his life as the punchy, washed-up pug. Jackie Gleason adds light and shade to the dreadful manager, making him human, complex and convincing. and Mickey Rooney is excellent as the rather underwritten good-guy trainer. Despite a great performance by Julie Harris, the notion that a middle-class employment councillor should take such a shine to our not-too-smart, not-too-good-looking, ex-fighter
strains the credibility a little: but it's a powerful and gripping film that will keep you fully engaged from zappy opening to elegaic close.- Was this review helpful to you?

(3)excellent study of a has been boxer
By itstinks (681 reviews) from North of Reading , 22 Sep 2010Well made film that shows a boxer with his best days behind him having to give up the onley thing he knows and trying to come to terms with it.
Anthony Quinn is extraordinary in the role and his monosyllabic delivery is perfectly suited to the character.
Mickey Rooney is good as the caring trainer and Gleason is the manager who has let things come unstuck.

Atmospheric
By a customer from Oxon England , 25 Mar 2006Although in B&W still very watchable and better than many more recent films.
A Quinn good man for the part.
Also good to see famous old faces playing cameo roles.- Was this review helpful to you?
