Wow! If you're a Sopranos or West Wing kind of person, Rescue Me might not quite hit those two heights - but by this second season it's seriously not far off. Not familair with Rescue Me? Believe me, if this show was on Channel 4 or More 4, it'd be smoking by now. However, it's not, so it isn't. But if you're prepared to take a chance, I promise you this show is a real gem.
Expanding on the ground work laid out in the first run, season two really broadens its horizons, not least for gladly sharing out more air time to the vibrant supporting cast that surround Leary's main man, Tommy Gavin.
Swerving from crisis to comedy without ever becoming imbalanced, the scripts are sharp, inventive, and it's now evident that Leary's former motor-mouth stand-up career stood him in good stead to write and structure compelling ensemble dialogue. To which end, it's credit to the man himself (who co-writes, co-produces and co-created) that Rescue Me is in no way a vanity piece.
Whilst its true to say that Rescue Me is more male-centric than most dramas, with the females sometimes dropping out of focus unless they're mingling with the men, this is now proving to be something of a positive. Without ever resorting to dumb macho posturing, the show is something of an illumination on what it means to be an everyday kind of guy in the 21st Century. Old guys learn to live with gay sons, husbands tackle family illness, young guys learn about love beyond lust, and the hard-knocks come thick and fast, even before the alarm call sounds.
And, once again, I've got to give it to Leary for creating a compelling character in Tommy. Very much an anti-hero in the vein of Tony Soprano, Tommy's battle with alcoholism is handled with genuine insight and intelligence, dumping all the lame-ass, cliched drama shortcuts of addiction, in favour of a humbling exploration of the demons we all have to face just getting through the day - come good times or bad.
A serious, serious treat, and one that I never expected to like so much when I first took a curious peak. But one that now sits in my top TV charts.
if you watch one thing this is the one rescue me it is slow to start in series one but once it gets going you are truly hooked.. it is a must see ..
