Alice (Milla Jovovich), one of only two survivors of a contained biochemical disaster, is still in the heart of Raccoon City. She has been subjected to biogenetic experimentation by the vast Umbrella Corporation and has super-human strengths, senses and dexterity. These skills, and more, will be needed if anyone is to remain alive. Alice is joined by Jill Valentine (Sienna Guillory), a recently demoted member of Umbrella Corp’s elite Special Tactics and Rescue Services, Terri Morales (Sandrine Holt), Carlos Oliviera (Oded Fehr), LJ (Mike Epps) and Nicholai (Zack Ward). And to escape what is quickly becoming a City of the Dead, they must battle their way past the ravenous undead, plus Umbrella forces and terrifying bioengineered weapons, the most deadly of which is the colossal, heavily-armed assassin Nemesis.

First-timer Alexander Witt picks up the directorial reins from Paul WS Anderson for this limp sequel to the 2002 video game adaptation. Continuing from where the original left off, it sees the zombies break out from the Umbrella Corporation's underground research facility to wreak havoc on the quarantined city above. Though once again written by Anderson, the film lacks his visual flair and breakneck pacing, resulting in an unbelievable and uninspired shoot-'em-up that's devoid of tension or excitement. Every aspect smacks of a quick cash-in, from the substandard effects to the feather-light plot and insipid (compared to the original) score. A returning Milla Jovovich may be stunning as kick-butt survivor Alice, but her new elite force commandos Sienna Guillory and Oded Fehr don't share her powerful screen presence. Consequently, with even the undead looking like Halloween party leftovers, this time around there's no escape from the movie's two-dimensional origins.
A loud, silly, critic-proof sequel that will doubtless appeal to those who saw the first film; they have my sympathy.
Resident Evil was supposed to be directed by George Romero. Can you imagine how amazing that would have been?! In the end, the film was directed by Paul WS Anderson (who 'successfully' managed to deliver the equally disappointing Mortal Combat movie - yet another video game turned film). Resident Evil contained plenty of references to Romero's genius, but was no more effective than giving any painter Picasso's palette and a canvas and saying 'go on, make a picasso'. However, the score (Marco Beltrami and Marilyn Manson) alongside the talented Milla Jovovich just about cut the mustard. Mild but tasty. Resident Evil: Apocalypse however is truly awful. Jovovich returns and gives her all but the cool soundtrack has been abandoned (and along with it the atmosphere). Presumably Manson and Beltrami saw the first film and ran for the hills. Wise. This sequel attempts to rip-off (sorry 'reference') John Carpenter and is even less successful than the failed attempt to rip off George Romero! A few set action pieces *are* handled well by the new Director. However, with the same writer/producer team behind the first film this is a franchise heading in ever-decreasing circles (they also managed to deliver Alien vs Predator... is there no humanity??!). Bland, pointless and lacking originality, this is an embarassingly clear attempt to milk as much money out of the Resident Evil brand as possible and a terrible association for Capcom and their unique and twisted video game. The potentially awful remake of Dawn of the Dead surprised everyone by delivering true scares and original ideas. It wasn't Romero but it was great fun and very stylish. If you want to see what happens when it all goes completely wrong, check out his sad movie. In my version the zombies turn on the film-makers (starting with the writer and producer). Of course, Milla escapes unscathed. FYI, she's the extra star I'm awarding.
One for spotty adolescent boys only. The rest of you will find it tired, dull and hackneyed.
Although a few parts of it are unintentionally quite amusing, making it just about watchable.
Gore-drenched zombie-fest Resident Evil: Apocalypse ran to the top of the US box office charts this week, taking $23.7 million in its opening weekend. Based on the 1992 Resident Evil videogame that went on to became one of the best selling console-based franchises of all time and the benchmark for the survival horror genre thereafter, Apocalypse follows on from the 2002 original, which also performed strongly at the box office despite enduring a critical mauling. Former supermodel Milla... Read more
